Cavaliers Shift to Short Punt Formation Lane Out for Season; Stahl Replaces Veber
A famine of varsity material plus injuries to a pair of key players in the Miami Beach game has caused Coach Johnny Noppenberg to shuffle his available Ponce de Leon manpower in an attempt to get the strongest possible starting line-up ready for tonight's game at Vero Beach. Early this week the Cavalier coach also indicated that he will run his squad from the deep punt formation instead of the regular single wing he has employed in beating Gesu and Lake Worth while bowing to South Broward and Miami Beach. Lost to the Cavaliers for the season is end George Lane and halfback Billy Veber will not see action for at least two weeks. Both played an outstanding game against the Typhoons at the latter's Memorial stadium before being injured in the fourth quarter. Westcott Starts; Dunn Elevated Allan Westcott, Cavalier utility lineman who has seen considerable duty at center, guard and tackle, will move into Lane's slot at left end, and Noppenberg said he intended to elevate Jimmy Dunn from the 'B' squad to replace Veber. Although Jack Stahl will draw Veber's duties, Dunn has shown plenty of hustle with the jayvees and is expected to give the Cavalier backfield another breakaway runner. Added to the Cavalier's problem-of-the-week is how to stop three rampaging ball carriers featured in the single-wing attack of Coach H. L. Watson's Vero Beach Indians. The return of halfback Bill Kymer to the Indian line-up after being sidelined with a broken collarbone prior to the first game, puts the undefeated Indians at full strength for their match with Ponce. Bob Bass and J. W. Calhoun, also triple-threat men, have paced the Vero Beach eleven to victories over St. Leo (last year's state Catholic high school champions), South Broward, Melbourne and Stuart. Calhoun, who averages two touchdowns per game, is Vero Beach's candidate for all-state honors, and Kymer is rated by Watson as being his equal in all departments. Watson Praises Cleverness Watson watched Ponce go down to the Beach Typhoons, 12-6, last Friday and had plenty of praise for the Cavaliers spirit and deception after the game. He singled out George Lane, Billy Veber and Sonny Parrish as the outstanding individual players and attributed the Cavaliers' loss to several bad breaks. The Ponce line had a hard time stopping the plunges of the Typhoons Dick Tannehill, but throttled a pair of Beach drives inside their own five-yard line. Fumbles and intercepted passes short-circuited the Cavalier coach's pre-game prediction of victory. Luck's Spell Beach TD's The Typhoon's two tallies came on a 33-yard Doug Cove to Jerry Teller pass that gave the Beach the ball on the two-yard line (from which Cove went over three plays later) and on Bill Gibson's 55-yard TD jaunt after intercepting Tom Pennekamp's pass in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers were bottled up deep in their own territory for the entire third period by fumbles and pass interceptions, but managed to threaten thrice in the final period with Malcolm Johnson doing most of the work. One drive was broken up by a fumble and a second by Gibson's interception before a 55-yard Bill Ward to Johnson pass connected for a token touchdown with three minutes of the game remaining. Ward, shifted to the backfield to pass and punt, was instrumental in a second quarter Ponce march that stalled on the Beach 18. He boomed a 61-yard kick to the Typhoon four-yard line and on the return kick Ponce took the ball on their opponent's 27. Parrish and Johnson went to a first down on the 19 in two plays, but pass interceptions ate up the opportunity and the Beach took over on their own 18-yard line.
