Birds, Dolls and Hibiscus Make Shenley Park News

By PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Ashem of 5773 S. W. 31st St., were underneath the bright heavens the other day admiring their glorious array of hibiscus plants which they have just put in place again since the annoying inclement weather which uprooted a great percentage of them. It is a job they may well be proud of, too, since the Ashem's have one of the most twenty-two varieties of the plant; undoubtedly the largest number in Schenley Park. At one time they had ninety-odd varieties and about one hundred and eighty-nine different types of hibiscus. Besides the hobby of their yard Mr. and Mrs. Ashem, since retiring and coming down here from Kan-sas City, Missouri, have numerous in-door hobbies they enjoy to the utmost. Mrs Ashem has six hundred different types of salt and pepper shakers. They are both ardent collectors of all sorts of objects d'art and frequent auction galleries several times a month. Mrs. Ashem admits very proudly that her husband is the finest cook in the world having at one time during his career perfected the culinary art and was a well known chef. of 2929 S. W. 58th Ave. who are in charge of the School of Music at Miss Harris's School are jubilant over the return of so many of their feathered friends which they have encouraged to become daily pets for their morning and evening meals in their yard. They are very happy over the great variety of birds they have been able to attract but such constant effort of love and devotion couldn't help but be rewarded. Inventor and Pet Trainer Mrs. Lorna Higgins and son, Raymond Rhind, of Schenley Park, have indeed a rae combination of talents between them. Besides having owned four different Tot and Gift shops in the greater Miami area, she is an inventor, an occupation which seems quite uncommon among the females of the species. At present she is occupied with the fascinating project of making a talking doll, which if the dreams of the originator are fulfilled, will have a mechanical arrangement so perfected that any child's voice might be recorded inside the dolly and made to appear as though the doll is doing the talking. Since just recently recuperating from a broken wrist, she has been entertaining herself with making hand-made dolls.
