Garden Club Opens Season With Program and Tea

Monday's Party Will Honor President Mrs. George Corrigan Mrs. George M. Corrigan will be honored as president of the Coral Gables Garden Club Monday afternoon at the reception and program of the group meeting at 2 p.m. in the women's club house. Mrs. William T. HIlles, chairman of the reception committee and Mrs. Douglas R. Reynolds, chairman of hospitality, assisted by Mrs. Cresswell M. Stedman, will have charge of tea and reception following the program. Roses being uppermost in the minds of Florida gardeners, at this time of year, Fred Dettmer, an authority on rose culture will be the speaker. Mona Finn will be soloist. Mrs. O. A. Sandquist is program chairman. Officers Named In addition to Mrs. Corrigan, who begins her second year as president of this important Coral Gables club, other officers are Mrs. O. A. Sandquist, 1st vice president; Mrs. Walter Wipprecht Jr., 2nd vice president; Mrs. Charles Miller, recording secretary; Mrs. James N. Ammen, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Horace F. Cordes, treasurer and Mrs. Herman Feick, auditor. Directors Directors include Mesdames: Fred Grinham, Fred Mizer, Charles Fuchs, Evan D. Roser, Howard Sullivan, Clifford White, Worth St. Clair, R. J. Meiners, John Norman, Robert Pentland, Sr., Edwin N. Belcher, William Merriam, William Cox, M. B. Garris and George C. Williams.

Corned Beef, Cabbage Supper To Feature St. Theresa's Halloween Festival Oct. 30th

Page "Jiggs and Maggie" for a corned beef and cabbage supper will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at the St. Theresa P.-T.A. Halloween festival. The festivities will open at 2 p.m. on the school grounds and continue throughout the evening. Mrs. Cyril H. Haas, president of the association and Mrs. Richard B. Roberts Jr., are in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Albert Russell is in charge of all the games including bingo and dart. The CYO will assist with the free games for children as well as booth and lighting arrangements. Each grade of the school will have a department to manage: kindergarten, pony rides with Mrs. Bernard S. Good chairman; 1st grade, candy, popcorn and apples with Mrs. T. L. FitzGibbon, chairman; 2nd, fish pond, Mrs. T. E. Norman, chairman; 3rd, dolls, Mrs. L. G. Lally; 4th, ice cream, Mrs. James Soille Jr.; 5th, cakes, Mrs. E. L. Duhaime; 6th, white elephants, Mrs. Harry N. Moss; 7th, movies, Mrs. I. Ray Mills; 8th, soft drinks, Mrs. F. A. Knauer; 9th, religious articles, Mrs. A. J. Muzzy; 10th handmades, Mrs. James A. Bennett; 11th, food, Mrs. J. H. Houghton and Mrs. Harry Herndon; 12th, horror booth, Mrs. Steadman Stahl.

Miss Brice Is Engaged

Of cordial interest in Miami and Jacksonville as well as Coral Gables is the engagement of Miss Marjorie Alice Brice and Thomas Charles Marley which is being announced today by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Brice of 803 Alhambra Circle. Miss Brice attended Miami Senior High school and was graduated from National Park College, Washington, D. C. She received her B.S. at the University of Miami and did graduate work at Columbia University this summer. Her fiance, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kenneth Marley of Jacksonville, formerly Miami, was educated in the Miami schools and is a graduate of Miami Senior High school. He entered the Merchant Marines during the war and now holds an officer's rating in the reserves. He is in business in Jacksonville. The wedding will be an event of November 27th and will take place at 7:30 p.m. o'clock at the Coral Gables First Methodist Church.

Elks Club Dance Is Halloween

Coral Gables Elks Club will stage its second annual costumed Halloween dinner-dance next Thursday night at the club. Prizes will be awarded for the most appropriate the most original and the funniest costume worn. And the committee is planning on all to wear something indicative of the season. Peter Lowe is chairman of the party arrangements. He is being assisted by Dr. Sidney G. Cassel, J. F. Hickey, James B. Hayes Jr. J. W. Levesedge and Robert H. Cribben. Florida Historical Association Set Monday For 25th session

'Shades of Captain Kidd' will invade the 25th program, meeting of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, when it meets at 8 p.m. Monday in the University of Miami Theatre, main building, 515 University Drive. A short business session will also take place. "Any news of buried treasure, ancient wrecks or pirates and their evil deeds inspires within all a secret desire to have lived in these golden days of high adventure," says Justin P. Havee who will review "Wrecks of Spanish Plate Ships on Florida Shores" by David O. True, a recognized authority on these olden times of 'blood and thunder.' Mr. True's scholarly studies of Ponce de Leon as well as his exceptional editorship of 'Fontaneda's Memories, qualify him to write on this subject. His outstanding work as a two-fold official of the association is well known and appreciated by the entire membership. On this evening members will hear of wedges of silver lying in heaps along the streets of Porto Bello and stacked like cordwood in the governor's mansion while awaiting th plate fleet. Mr. True tells of fleets carrying more than 50 million dollars of precious cargo and of the fillibusters and buccaneers attack; also a vivid account of a terrible hurricane encountered. Olin C. Webb, baritone and Miss Elizabeth Suddath, pianist will entertain with musical selections during the evening. All members and interested non-members are invited to attend this meeting.

MRS. REID R. BRONSON, who will open her pretty country ome 2122 Burteshaw Road, So. Miami from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday for a silver tea sponsored by the members of group 6 of the Woman's Association of the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. T. L. Matthews group chairman is being assisted by Mrs. D. F. Hosford, tea chairman and committee Mrs. C. R. Williams, Mrs. D. B. Welsh and the hostess Mrs. Bronson.

Merrick Carnaval To Take Place Saturday at School

A "dog that actually plays the piano" will be the feature attraction at the big Halloween carnival the Merrick Demonstration School will stage from 2 p.m. on Saturday at the school grounds. Under the direction of the Parent-Teacher association, attractions will include scooter rides, pony rides, plenty of food. Gaily decorated booths will display irrestitble wares. There will be movies and something doing all afternoon and evening. Mrs. Phillip Scheffskey chairman of the carnival is being assisted by Mrs. Nicholas Hodsdon, room mother chairman. Mrs. George Murray is president of the P-T.A.

Mother and Son Doing "Fine"

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kevin Reynolds, Jr., are announcing the arrival of a boy Monday at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The new son, who weighed six pounds and nine ounces, has been named for his daddy and shall be called Kevin. The junior Mrs. Reynolds is the former Miss Eleanor Mizer, daughter of the Fred Mizer's, 1425 Avenue Santa Cruz. Incidently on the very same date, Oct. 20, Eleanor's cousin, and bridesmaid at her wedding, the former Miss Dorothy Reigraff, now Mrs. Fred Ennerson, of Montclair, N. J., gave birth to a baby daughter.

To Attend Shoe Convention

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bailey left Wednesday for Chicago, Ill., where they will attend the National Shoe Convention. Enroute home they will visit in Cincinnati, Ohio with Mrs. Bailey's brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Asbury, who have often visited at the Gables home of the Bailey's. Going by train, the Baileys will be away two weeks.

Visits Western Inn

N. P. O'Brien of 405 Avenue Mendoza was among recent guests at the "Western Inn," resort hotel featuring the southwest's first airstrip for flying patrons, in El Paso, Texas.

Youth Center Sets Halloween For Dance

The Coral Gables Memorial Youth Center will stage a costume dance from 8 to 10 p.m. on Halloween (Oct. 31). Prizes will be awarded for the "Prettiest" "Funniest" and "Most Novel" costumes worn by the guests. Ducking for apples will be the main attraction. The party is being sponsored by the Coral Gables Soroptimist Club under the direction of Mrs. Nikki O'Connor. More than 400 members and their guests attended the Optimist sponsored "King and Queen of Smiles dance last week at the center. Buddy Randle 11 and Gail Reid 13 received the cups as king and queen of smiles.

Countess Duras Returns

Countess Colette Duras has returned to her Coral Gables home after a sojourn at Miami Beach for the summer and a trip to Havana, Cuba accompanied by her daughter Mrs. A. F. Rousack, whose home is in the Hudson Valley, N.Y. In Havana the mother and daughter were guests of their cousins Gonzales de Quesada, European Consul and Mrs. de Quesada.

Officer Edwards is Dad

Officer W. A. Edwards was passing out cigars at Police Headquarters today in celebration of the birth of a baby boy to Mrs. Edwards at the Coral Gables Hospital Tuesday. Junior tipped the scales at six pounds three ounces upon arrival. The Edwards live at 8806 SW 35th Street.

Son Born to Leiningers

Mr. and Mrs. John Leininger of 1029 Avenue Milan are announcing the birth of a son Robert John, Oct. 2 at the Coral Gables Hospital. Robert John, who has a sister Joan Lee 4, was named for an uncle and a cousin.
