LOOKING AT SPORTS
By DON CUDDY. When the state football championship was claimed for the Hurricanes last year by virtue of their win over Florida, Rollins college supporters put up a squawk; Neither team had risked anything against the Tars - so the Winter Parkers claimed the title too. Friday night at the Orange Bowl there was some sense to that argument. The Tars showed themselves to be a classy ball club; not just an inspired one but a well-coached, hard-running and alert eleven. 'WE WANT CAMPBELL' Prediction: Every time the going gets rough for the Hurricanes from here on in a chant will rise from the Miami section: "Give the ball to Campbell and let him run." It's difficult to describe what makes a ball player colorful - but the former Navy bosn's mate who was all-state in football, basketball and baseball in Caldwell, N. J., definitely has it and is eager to roll for the Hurricanes. Coach Jack Harding now has Hal Johnson, the boy who runs with his head . . . Al Kasulin, the boy who makes with the feet - and "Whitey" Campbell - the boyish wingback who runs with his heart. Until the U. of M. comes up with a player who has it all the way . . . "Whitey" will be the people's choice. Add that he is also the wizard who will make Miami sportsmen basketball conscious now that the Hurricanes have the Coliseum. CANNED 'SPIRIT' The Rollins stands Friday had plenty of spirit - but some of their demonstration was more of the prize ring variety than what one is accustomed to at the Orange Bowl. You can say what you want about Miami fans . . . rarely have they ever booed an opponent as the Rollins rooters did Friday. Harry Ghaul got the raspberries when he attempted a fourth down field goal from the 21-yard line . . . and they abused Hal Johnson when he merely asked the referee for a towel. Most of the times that more than one orange and white jersey was in on a tackle the chorus from the south stands bewildered the men on the field. The Hurricanes never play touch football rules, but (Please Turn to Page 11)
