FIVE HUNDRED ATTEND RECEPTION MEMBERS AND GUESTS GREET PRESIDENT AS WOMAN'S CLUB OPENS SEASON WITH PARTY

Amid flowers, music and pretty new fall clothes, Coral Gables Woman's Club opened its 24th season Monday with a reception for its president, Mrs. William Cox. Gone was the customary program which highlighted each first meeting in years past. Gone wear the chairs. In place were two tea tables flanking and a right angles to the platform. On the platform Oliver Washburn and his stringed ensemble dispensed classic airs. Baskets of yellow and bronze baby chrysanthemums centered the lace clothed tea tables, placed with four silver services. A perfect setting, a perfect afternoon, attended by more than 500 members and their guests. Mrs. John DeNoon, first vice president and general chairman of the party, headed the receiving line. Her formal gown of white crepe with bodice and girdle drape of the same material in shades of purple in geometrical design, was complimented with a white baby chrysanthemum corsage. Next in line was the honored Mrs. Cox in gray crepe formal with sequined blouse and sorsage. All other officers of the executive board in the receiving line were in formals and all wore white baby mums corsages. During the hour your reporter was there Mrs. Evan D. Roser, Mrs. Don Peabody, Mrs. O. A. Sandquist and Mrs. Reid R. Bronson, all past presidents, presided at the tea services. Mrs. Peabody, a distinguished club woman, who holds the title of honorary lift president of the club, is new director of District 11 of the federation. With Mrs. W. T. Mixson was Mrs. R. C. Noble, a newcomer from North Hampton, Mass., who, with her husband, Dr. Noble, and two sons, Robert Jr., and Harry, are residing in their new home at 5920 Granada Boulevard. Robert attends Ponce de Leon High school; Harry, Merrick Demonstration. Chatting in groups we spied Mrs. Charles W. Cone, stunningly dressed in royal blue crepe with exactly matching hat and gloves; Mrs. George M. Corrigan in greige crepe with the new long, long hemline and matching feather trimmed beanie; Mrs. Evan D. Roser in wine crepe with exactly matching felt hat. Mrs. S. Earle Giffen was greeting friends for the first time since her return with Mr. Giffen from an extended motor trip and vacation. Mrs. Lem Stevens was telling of plans for a trip to Georgia with her husband in the next week, and while there they will visit their daughter Helen, a freshman student at Brenau College for Women, Gainesville. Helen, who recently was pledged Alpha Delta Pi, national social sorority, will major in piano study at Brenau. Mrs. Denis Renuart, who had just returned from North Carolina, was exclaiming over the warm day. Spending a month at their place near Asheville, Mr. Renuart commented as often as business permitted, to enjoy the cool climate, she said. Mrs. Russell Paige was noted wearing new street length black satin with gold accessories; also Mrs. G. G. Lee, who greeted guests at the door; Miss Paquita Rabell and Miss Mary B. Merritt. Mrs. Malcolm McDonald was stunning in a wine red crepe with exactly matching veiled feather-trimmed felt; Mrs. James M. Coker, always smartly clad, wore a black silk suit with becoming derby styled hat; Mrs. George Simpson, wine red crepe, invited us to drop by to see Mr. Simpson's collection of hunting trophies, to which he has added a deer, from their recent expedition to the far west. Miss Lelia White, Mrs. Lynn Perry and Mrs. J. Riley Staats of poetry and allied arts in the club, were noted earnestly talking together. Costumed as smartly as always was Mrs. R. R. Bronson, a past president of the club, whose black silk draped model dress was complimented with a black and white feather veiled toque.

INTRODUCING THE SOROPTIMISTS Selling Gables Real Estate Is Natural For Lila Lehman

Working a whole year, as a real estate salesman, without even a desk, was the first business experience of Lila Palmer Lehman, successful Coral Gables broker and eighth personality in the Riviera-Times stories of career girls, charter member of the Soroptimist Club. Working was such a novelty for this truly reared Southern girl that absence of a desk, let alone a real salary meant nothing in her life at that time. With her husband, Warren Lehman, Lila LeGare Palmer, came as a bride to Florida in 1910. Mr and Mrs. Lehman are truly pioneers. He was first salesmanager for Geo. E. Merrick and both Mr. and Mrs. Lehman were associated in business with the founder of Coral Gables until he, Mr. Merrick, became postmaster in Miami. However Mr. Merrick had strict rules regarding the employment of women in his organization. Lila Palmer Lehman became the first saleswoman, and for a long time the only one working with 20 salesmen. Reared according to the strict rules of Southern girls in the ante bellum days, Mrs. Lehman was the daughter of pioneer South Carolinians. Her schooling did not include a business course. Therefore her method of sales approach was never learned from a book entitled, "How to Sell Real Estate." Her first impulse was just to show visitors around and we're of the opinion that her soft spoken well modulated voice with that southern accent did the rest. "I just had to sell Coral Gables" Mrs. Lehman told your reviewer, "and I have been doing it ever since those first hectic days of the boom and I am proud of my record. Coral Gables was beautifully laid out with its wide landscaped parkways and its winding curving avenues and streets. Hearing the exclamations of 'Oh's and Ah's' from those entranced people as the scene unfolded was music to my ears, whether they bought or not". Among Mrs. Lehman's most cherished memories is the ride on the first street car in Coral Gables. "I was so thrilled with the thought of riding on the first car right up the center of Ponce de Leon Boulevard, she said, that I drove out to Coconut Grove to pick up my two small nephews so that they could have the thrill also." Mrs. Lehman is a member of the Coral Gables Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and a Member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. As for hobbies? "Just looking after my husband, a job that I like and that I have been doing for the past 37 years." Mr. and Mrs. Lehman spend their summers at Scaly, North Carolina, where they have acquired a small country estate about 8 miles from Highlands. "It's far from the maddening throng" this tiny energetic woman said, "but but on the days we go to town, we see more Coral Gableites than we do most days during the season in downtown Miami".
