Dry Terrain Is Reported In 'No Man's Land'

BY DOT THAGARD Riviera-Times Correspondent With a swing to the more normal weather this week and the sun beaming down in typical Florida style, residents all along the avenues were observed hanging out winter clothes, ridding their homes and clothes of dampness and that bugarboo of us all "mildew." The 600's are completely out of the water and everyone is repairing their yards and driveways. The Ralph Duggan's of 605 Avenue Obispo are replacing the entrance to their driveways with one of concrete — no more of that soggy mess for them. The Rudolph Walter's of 618 Avenue Obispo are announcing a new addition to their family — a lovable little black Cocker Spaniel. On our last visit a name of the pup hadn't been selected, but young Marshall and Leslie were experimenting with selections of their own. Attend Reception Mrs. Walter and Mrs. William Cauley of 540 Avenue Zamora represented our section in the receiving line at the Junior Woman's Club reception last Wednesday. (Mrs. Walter is the second vice president and Mrs. Cauley the new corresponding secretary). We finagled a preview of Mrs. Cauley's luscious gown (our deadline being Wednesday noon), a lovely white and gold brocaded off-the-shoulder, swing skirted model. Celebrate Birthday Our own particular small fry celebrated the twins seventh birthday anniversary Tuesday. (That's our cue to say "My, how time flies," and it sure does). The young Richardson children, Madge and Martha, are recuperating nicely from their siege of pneumonia. Also, well up on the recovery list is George Haas of 625 Avenue Obispo, who seems himself again, although still having to temper the "old wim and vigor." Mr. and Mrs. Haas' youngest daughter, Sally, looking like a high-school student, has been graduated from the University of Miami and is now associated with the Coral Gables Federal Savings and Loan Association. Mrs. J. P. Cahill and son, James, from Hanover, Mass., have purchased the home at 4499 S. W. 16th Terrace, from Mr. and Mrs. Pat Reynolds, who are leaving to make their home in New York. In Time for Storm Edward and Gretchen Griffith, former Gables residents, but now "Lower No Man's Landers," having recently built the home at 4455 S. W. 16th Lane, returned from an extensive vacation in time to enjoy (?) the recent storm. The Griffiths, with young daughter, Susan, visited Gretchen's parents, the S. W. Washburn's Gabelites, at their summer home in Hamorock Beach, Mass., then traveled to Canada and enroute home stopped for awhile at Sea Island, Georgia.

James Goodwin Is Promoted By U. S. Army

From Schenectady this week came word that Maj. James M. Goodwin has been advanced to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Officer's Reserve Corps of the U.S. Army. Promotion of the Gables officer was made public by Gen. George E. Hartman, commandant of the Army General Distribution Depot in New York City, where Goodwin has been assigned as post engineer. Lt. Col. Goodwin, veteran of two tours of duty in the European theatre, was awarded the Legion of Merit for his part in liberation of some 600 allied flyers shot down in enemy dominated territory during World War II. Dropped by parachute behind Nazi lines in Yugoslavia, the officer fought with partisan resistance forces and set up machinery for rescue of downed airmen by plane from secret bases. The 26-year-old officer is the son of Mrs. H. T. Nugent of 700 Avenue Navarre. Lt. Col. Goodwin, his wife, and their two sons, Blake and Gregory, are making their home near Schenectady.
