Rules Are Tools to Dean Of Boys at Ponce Jr. High

By GAIL MARSHALL Correspondent "They're just like a bunch of bantam roosters. Sometimes they just don't know how to handle their own strength." With the 1960-61 school year near an end, Elmer Day reviewed some of the problems he's handled in 13 years of experience as dean of boys at Ponce de Leon Junior High School. "There's an ornery one in every group," he says. But he's always careful to add, "Usually if you let them get it off their chests, it's settled." Day handles attendance and registration in the spring for the coming fall term, but disciplinary problems take up the biggest part of his time. PROBLEMS VARY "The problems vary from year to year," he says, "and for the most part they're minor—mischief and play, things they try to do to have a good time—but they don't please the teachers." There are rules against smoking and against leaving the school grounds, and the dean lists knives and obscene language as offenses for suspension. But he has been trained in guidance and has a special way of handling young boys' problems. "I write out a suspension and at the same time a notice to withhold which varies according to the individual. It doesn't go on his record as long as he follows the agreement to behave. Most of the time I never have to see them again." 17 THIS YEAR Day classifies the 17 suspensions for this year as low compared with other years. In the 1959-60 term there were 26 suspensions. There are several other ways to solve major problems. In some years, Coral Gables police officers have had to visit the school. For instance, auto theft was a frequent occurrence during one year, and although it was done outside of school time, the problem was brought to the dean. ELMER DAY Day describes his job as assistant principal for administration, a position new to the school this year. He has actually been at Ponce for 31 years and was made dean in 1937. BUILDING BURNED His most memorable exericence occured when the building burned in December of 1951. The upper story was gutted and out of use for the rest of that year and part of the next fall. The students only lost two days of school, but were forced to go on double session for six weeks. After the fire and before the new building was erected, 21 portable classrooms were used to maintain educational facilities for over 2,000 students. But as Mr. Day says, "The problems are generally small." There is also a "visiting teacher" who talks with parents and who is experienced in truancy. As a last resort, problems are taken to the director of student welfare at the juvenile court. Last year one case had to be referred to the court, but there have been no such incidents this year.
