What I Tell My Daughters

By a Gables Mother. DEAR JOAN: I was appalled the other day when I entered the living room with a friend of mine and you merely looked up and said "Hi", ur dog is not exactly noted for his manners, but at least he jumped up and wagged his tail in greeting. True, new days bring new ways, but, old-fashioned as it may seem to you, respect for your elders will always be a sign of refinement. Did you actually feel that it wasn't necessary to stand when we entered? I hope not. It was a simple mishap, nevertheless, it showed that you are not aware of the little courtesies and attentions that are the foundation of wellbred femininity. If you forget everything else, remember this — young people always rise when their elders enter the room, and they remain standing until the older persons are seated. There is no better way of developing your social sense than by beginning at home. And don't complicate your life by having two sets of manners, one for home and the other for the world. Someone once said "There are two kinds of people who have no manners — those who never acquired them and those who don't want any." If you would have the magic power of charm, have good manners. LOVE, MOTHER

Legion Will Observe Memorial Day Here

The men who never forget — the American Legion — have planned one of their largest Memorial Day observances for next Tuesay at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center. Scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., the event will include virtually every local veteran's organization. E. W. Deering, past commander of Coral Gables Post No. 98, American Legion, will conduct the opening ceremony. This will be followed by the massing of the colors. Massing of the colors will be followed by the memorial ode, by the Rivera Brothers Quartet. Albert Cage, past chaplain, Department of Florida, will say the memorial prayer. This will be followed by a tableau — The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, presented by Biscayne Voiture No. 1490, La Societe 40-8. Wreaths will be placed by Mrs. Lillian Stein representing the Gold Star Mothers; Mrs. Vera Kelly, the VFW Auxiliary; Mrs. Melvin Morris, JWV Auxiliary; and Mrs. Rose Cayares, American Legion Unit 98 Auxiliary. Following taps, Mayor Robert L. Searle will deliver the Memorial Day address. The Rivera Brothers Quartet will give a second performance with the ceremonies ending on the benediction of Chaplain James A. Boston, of the Veterans Hospital.
