"Alaska, the 49th State of the Union, has lost its frontier flavor. Log cabins stand in the shadow of skyscrapers, primitive Eskimo villages dot the Arctic shores and gold is still panned in muddy creeks. There are still wide-open spaces, jagged peaks, virgin forests and ice-blue glaciers," Bill Mason of Travel Inc. said. "While Alaska retains its rugged charm, the discomforts which confronted the pioneers in the good old days do not confront the tourist. Smooth, new highways crisscross the land, and link the main cities with the most remote outposts. A string of modern hotels and comfortable inns, many built with federal aid during the last few years, are now thriving on tourist trade. "What is more, the Jet Age has come to Alaska. The distance for example, from Seattle to Fairbanks, once six hours by air, is now just 3 hours and 20 minutes. Since there is a time difference of two hours between the two cities, passengers who leave Seattle at 8:15 arrive in Fairbanks at 9:35 a.m., or 1 hour and 20 minutes later by clock. "The peak season for travel to Alaska is the summer, but more and more tourists are discovering that spring is also a good time for a vacation in the 49th state. The temperature in May is 65 degrees, the rainy season is over and the sun stays high 18 hours a day. "Tourists planning a spring or summer holiday in Alaska should dress comfortably with emphasis on sport clothes, slacks, sweaters and walking shoes. A light top-coat is advisable." BILL MASON
