Plush Hammock Oaks Meets More Opposition
The grand plans developer Sol Rovin has made for plush Hammock Oaks subdivision have run into more opposition. Residents living in the area of Fairchild Tropical Gardens have objected to Rovin's plans to build apartment houses in ne area of the subdivision. The City Commission tentatively approved the Hammock Oaks plat at its May 16th meeting, but final approval awaits ironing out of the apartment facet. Hammock Oaks is in the process of being re-platted in the wake of the last year's golf course and canal fiasco which ruined Rovin's plan for a private golf course to be carved principally out of Matheson Hammock Park and a canal connecting the subdivision to Biscayne Bay. The golf course fizzled under pressure after it had been approved by both the County and Coral Gables. An abbreviated version of the canal was finally okayed with the provision that it would not breach the salt water line. Rovin went ahead and replatted the land to conform with the new restrictions and included a plan to add 11 apartments with a total of 128 units. Objections, based principally on fear of congestion and depreciation of property values, have come from a half dozen nearby residents and representatives of Fairchild Tropical Gardens.
City Sued Over Fall From Bus
A $100,000 damage suit has been filed against the City of Coral Gables by a Miami Beach woman who claims she was injured in a fall from a Gables bus last year. Acting City Attorney William Burton Jr. has filed to have the Circuit Court suit dismissed. Robert M. Bader, attorney for Mrs. Ida Cutler, said the woman suffered head, neck and back injuries when the bus lurched or moved forward as she was getting off and she fell to the pavement. Mrs. Cutler was on her way to visit her husband at Veterans Hospital the morning of Aug. 7, 1960 and was injured in front of the hospital, Bader said.
