Church Is 35 Years Old University Baptist to Honor Those 78 Who Saw a Future

The University Baptist Church will celebrate its 35 years of service to Coral Gables Sunday by honoring the 78 members who founded the church May 30, 1926. At the 8:30 and 11:00 o'clock morning service Sunday, the minister, Dr. T. Rupert Coleman, who flew back from the Southern Baptist Convention in St. Louis for this special occasion, will present to the congregation those members who were among the founders. His message for the occasion will be on the subject, "The New Testament Church." The combined choirs will sing "Glory in Excelsior." On Wednesday at 7:30 in the evening, a special "Dedication Unveiling Plaque" service will be held in the sanctuary. The service will conclude with the congregation adjourning to the new chapel, completed earlier this year. There a bronze memorial plaque will be unveiled in honor of and appreciation for the Founding Members. Within the plaque is a capsule in which DR. COLEMAN will be sealed a parchment scroll bearing the names of the founders. The Chapel will be dedicated in honor of the Founding Members and is to be known as "The Memorial Chapel." The Memorial Chapel is a miniature replica of the church's sanctuary, designed by O. K. Houstoun. The Memorial Chapel seats 175 persons and is connected with bride's and families' rooms especially designed for weddings and funerals. Unveiling the plaque will be the two members of the church whose family has continuous lineage from the founders, Miss Sandra Jean Markley and James M. Markley IV. They are children of deacon James M. Markley III. Of the 78 founding members, the following are still members of the church: Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bliss, Oliver Hoover, Nevin LaHuls and Mrs. John L. Pepper.

Rushing Is Delayed

The Council of Fraternity Presidents, legislative branch of the Interfraternity Council, has voted to initiate a system of "deferred rush" on the UM campus effective February 1962. By the plan, first semester freshmen will not be permitted to pledge a fraternity. The CFP is hopeful that the deferred rushing program will prove an added incentive for men to apply themselves to their studies. They must have a cumulative grade-point average of "C" to be eligible to rush and pledge any of the 24 national fraternities, on campus.
