by helen reynolds society editor Ira F. Willard, president of the City National Bank of Coral Gables, was both "pa and ma" Saturday evening when son Jeff was host at a breakfast following his Coral Gables High School prom. Dutch's wife, Mary, was in Iowa awaiting their daughter, Bibbie's (Mrs. Paul B.) Willis' fourth child. But Mrs. Chris Steers, journalism teacher; and Mrs. Janet Burd, and Harold Tripp, also of the high school faculty, were along to lend a hand. Thirty members and their dates were there, including Wheel Club President Spencer Howell Jr. Gladys (Mrs. Clarence) Kuhn, 1200 Manati Ave., tells this story on herself. At the breakfast of the Altar and Rosary Society, Epiphany Church, she was to install the new officers. Some one had told her that if she felt shaky on the idea of talking over the mike to just take a couple of aspirins. "I also wear a hearing aid," Mrs. Kuhn said, "and I always keep extra batteries (they are tiny) on hand. "I placed the two aspirins on the left side of my plate, and the two tiny batteries on the right." When she stood up to talk, she wasn't a bit nervous, she talked and talked and told her friends, as she looked down at he plate, that she never felt better, that the words were bubbling over inside of her, that she must "have taken the batteries in place of the aspirins." She hadn't, but she convulsed her listeners. Mrs. Kuhn helped train salesmen in the sale of coal when she and her husband lived in the North, so she is no neophyte in the lecture field. Ed Wylie, and his German-born wife, Marianne, are in Europe for a three months visit. They sailed on the Dutch Cruise ship "Willemrey" out of Port Everglades. They write Ed's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry V. Wylie, 3413 Banos Ct., that they rode bicycles while docked in Bermuda. They are visiting Marianne's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Dahl of Zweibruchen, and on their return, they are heading for California, where Ed is going to look around San Francisco. Ed worked his way through Coral Gables High School with his ability with the percussion instruments, which landed him a scholarship to the University of Miami and its Band of the Hour. Then before he could take advantage of his good fortune, he was "called-to-arms" with the U.S. Air Force and stationed in Germany. There he met pretty, dark-haried Marianne, and they became engaged. Ed and Marianne were married in the chapel of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables in June, 1958. Last June (1960), Ed was graduated from the University with a major in Russian and a minor in German. He is a member of Sigma Chi, social fraternity; Phi Mu Alpha, music honorary and head of the percussion section of the UM Band-of-the-Hour.
