Gables Truck Drivers Win Awards In Dade Road-E-O

Drivers for the City of Coral Gables showed up among the best drivers at the Dade County Road-E-O Saturday. Three of four Gables drivers came away winners in the countywide contest, the first time held. And planned to be expanded next year to include Broward County communities. Taking second place in the Heavy Truck Division was James A. Moore, a Hollywood resident and trash truck driver. Another second place winner from the Gables was John L. Hoffkins, 3001 SW 92nd Ct., who competed in the Pick-Up Truck Division. C. W. Mort, Jr., of 3435 SW 104th Ct., took third place in the Light Truck Division, to round out the County Road-E-O winners. Sadler Winner Warren Sadler, 8301 SW 37th St., who took first place in the city Road-E-O, held April 29, did not place in the Dade County show. He represented the Youth Center. First winners in the County Road-E-O received a $100 bond and trophy; second place winners got $50 bonds and a trophy. The City of Coral Gables gave first place winners a trophy, certificate and three-day leaves; second place winners a certificate and two day leaves; and third place winners got one day off. Light Mulled For Waterway Entrance

Boat owners, now is the time to come to the aid of your fellow boat owners. The Coast Guard plans to repaint the pile dolphin at the entrance to the Coral Gables Waterway white and change the color of the navigational light from white to green. The piling had been painted black with a white light, but boat owners complained of difficulty in differentiating the light from surrounding residential and street lights. Barry Ryan, of the Coral Gables Yacht Club, which worked for the change, is handling the survey for the Coast Guard. Boat owners should contact Ryan at the 401 Building, Coral Gables, to relate their experiences with the new setup. A 60-day period has been allowed to determine the results.

Thieves Pass 28 Flavors, Take $766

Investigators haven't determined how it was done, but a thief got $766 from a safe at Howard Johnson's 1450 South Dixie Hwy., Monday. According to Coral Gables police, the theft was discovered by janitor Albert McGuire, 5899 SW 67th St., when he opened the restaurant shortly before 6 a.m. McGuire told police that he found the upper half of the company safe broken into. Everything was in order when night manager, Jasper Rogusa, 4385 SW 112th Court, left at 2:10 a.m. Police found no sign of a break or any other evidence to indicate how the theft occurred.

Terminal Work

The Coral Gables Bus Terminal is going to get its face scrubbed and a new paint job. City Commissioners voted $2,850 Tuesday to W. B. Reynolds company to sandblast the building, plug up all the cracks and repaint it.
