PEOPLE, Places & Things

We continue to come across ramifications of the People to People Program. Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Mejia were in town recently from Cartagena, Colombia. Mejia, a builder, was buying machinery in Miami. While visiting in the Gables, they saw old friends Warren Blackmon, Dutch Willard and Fred Hartnett. The Hartnetts, incidentally, called on the daughters of some Cartagenians while they visited Haverford, Pa. The girls were in school at nearby Germantown. Two Gableites already have their sheepskins from Stetson University. They are Judy Ann Hohman, who received a BS degree, and Judith Ann Grentner, a BA, in ceremonies held for 204 graduating seniors last Sunday at DeLand. Miss Hohman plans to work for a private accounting firm in Miami. She was treasurer of Pi Beta Phi sorority, representative on the Women's Council historian for the Mortar Board and served as Accounting Club secretary. Miss Grentner was also a member of Pi Beta Phi. Just call them doctor. Four Coral Gables men were among more than 700 who received degrees in the largest class to be graduated from Emory University since the GI bumper crop. The four are Peter B. Mills, 414 Malaga Ave., who received a DDS; Gordon Neil Gerson, 3611 Ponce de Leon Blvd., MD; Warren W. Quillan, 6925 Veronese, St., MD; and D. Michael Martin, 1341 Blue Rd. Boston University was the graduation scene Sunday for two Gables women, Rosalie Footnick, 233 Velarde Ave., and Lillian Mary Stuart Tod, 319 Mendoza Ave. Each received a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts. Robert A. McCowen was among the 875 students who were graduated by the University of Virginia Sunday. McCowen received a master's degree in business administration. A law degree was conferred on Martin Garden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Garden, 2700 Alhambra Cir., Monday at the 100th commencement exercises to be held at Washington University. Garden is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1955. Alan Sockloff 411 Malaga Ave., was elected president of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity at Emory University. Alan is also vice president of the sophomore class. Tracy Newcomb Tumlin, 4733 Santa Maria St., will receive a bachelor of engineering degree from Yale University Monday. Tumlin is one of 2,025 candidates for degrees at Yale's 260th commencement. Mrs. Jerome Corin, 515 Alminar Ave., has been named area chairman for the book fund for Brandeis University National Women's Committee. Contributions to the Jewish university's book campaign may be made through Mrs. Corin. William H. O'Neal, a pilot since 1940, has been named vice president and general manager of Madden and Playford Aircraft, a firm he has been associated with since 1957. O'Neal, who lives at 5311 Maggiore St., pilots the firm's Lockheed Lodestar about the country. The University of Florida grad was once chief pilot for All America Airways which flew displaced persons from Europe after World War II. O'NEAL The M. A. Baskins, of 1819 Ferdinand St., traveled to Boston for the graduation from Harvard College of their son, Jonathan, a biology major. Jonathan is a third generation graduate from that distinguished New England institution and from Gables High.
