Backyard Teams Where There's Bud There're Boys And Here's His Tale

By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer Autumn was in the air as the 1954 station wagon rolled down Sunset Drive. Inside the car were seven excited Gables boys and one football. The car stopped at Sunset Elementary School. The boys hopped out. At their side was Bud Hunter. It was three years ago that Hunter took his son, Lee, who was then eight, and boys in the neighborhood for a game of touch football on the school field. But what a beginning! MEET REGULARLY Under Hunter's guidance, the boys, who now number 20, meet regularly during the year for tackle football, basketball, track and swimming. Hunter, who lives at 5904 San Vicente St., believed three years ago his son and his pals lacked a chance to play an organized game of sports. He decided to do something about it. "The boys were all out in the front yard trying to play football," Hunter said, puffing a cigar as he recalled that day. "But they were arguing more than they were playing! "And so every Saturday and Sunday I got them in the station wagon and took them down to the Sunset field and tried to put some organization into their game." Hunter puffed thoughtfully. "And I think boys of that age are gravitating toward adulthood." This is a main reason why Hunter, director of Industrial Relations for Florida Power and Light, organizes athletics for neighborhood boys in his spare time. He said the boys he works with are 11 to 13 years old, a point in life when they are leaving their childhood and entering the early stages of adulthood. "These are gentlemanly, high-principled boys," Hunter said. "They're very cooperative, very bright... "And I know they can take the thrills and experiences they get from sports right into the business world in later life." Hunter's swimming program is a good example of how practical the Gableite finds the sport. It's more than a boy splashing water. BACKYARD MEET Hunter had held the "Riviera Swimming Meet" in his backyard pool for three years. This year's tilt is set for late June. "By giving this one swim meet each year, Hunter said, it gives an incentive for the boys to get into condition and work to improve... "And they really work! Right now the kids in the neighborhood are talking about it. " 'When is the swim meet going to be?' 'When does the practice start?' " The husky Hunter said he recently pitted neighborhood boys against a crack swimming team made up of Boy Scouts from Troup 229 of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The neighborhood boys lost to a more experienced team by 10 points. But Hunter was elated at the show his lads made. "They just didn't come out to go through the actions," he said. "They came out determined to win. NO SULKING "And yet when they lost, they didn't sulk. They became more determined to win next time!" Hunter said Hal Beddow, Troup 229 of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The neighborhood boys lost to a more experienced team by 10 points. But Hunter was elated. Hunter said Hal Beddow, Troop 229's Scoutmaster, and George Carifio and Steve Sintros, physical education instructors at Sunset Elementary, were very important in encouraging the boys' interest in athletics.
