'Stand Up and Be Counted' On High Rise, Realtors Told
A Coral Gables Realtor has asked the Board of Realtors to "stand up and be counted" on the high rise building question. Charles Taylor last week asked the board to take a strong stand in favor of high rise buildings which he said are really multiple-story buildings. "I think the Board of Realtors should stand up and be counted and let the City Commission know how we feel," Taylor said. The people who support the construction of multiple-story buildings have not made their feelings known to the Commission, said Taylor. Board President Robert Davidson said last week that the proposal was discussed by members but they felt too many were absent from the meeting to take a stand. Taylor's request will be taken up at the March 1 meeting of the directors, Davidson said. All buildings more than three stories in height must be approved by the City Commission. Rader and Associates recently conducted a study on this and other zoning problems. The final report is to be made to the City Commission in the near future.
Money Saved
Blue Road Bridge will cost $19,775 to build — about $5,000 less than the City had estimated. Atlantic Foundation Company, low bidder among five, was awarded the contract. Bids ranged up to $23,448. The City had estimated a $25,000 construction cost. The bridge will replace a street-level bridge on Blue Road which links University Drive and Granada Boulevard. The new bridge will permit large boats to go through to the Coral Gables Waterway. Atlantic recently constructed the $200,000 Miami Herald bulkhead and seawall.
We May Get $1 Fine
Coral Gables is itching to get back to the old $1 overtime on-street parking fine. County Commissioner Jack Gordon will introduce an ordinance March 6 to allow each municipality to set its own fine schedule. This is opposed by County Manager Irving McNayr who seeks a uniform $1 fine throughout the county, progressive with $3 and $5 fines for those delaying to pay. Coral Gables last year took back enforcement of its off-street lots and has been issuing its own $1 overtime parking tickets there. Metro keeps one-third the monies collected for administration and returns two-thirds to the cities.
Off-Street Law Came Up in 1957
(EDITORIAL ON PAGE 4) The proposed off-street parking ordinance that would spell an end to parking in unimproved commercial and industrial lots is largely a resurrected plan. A similar proposal, made back in 1957, was abandoned by the City Commission after opposition mounted. The Commission at that time cited the fact that cars using unimproved lots were tearing up alleys, said City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. Now, the Commission, split 3-2 in favor of the ordinance, cites "dust, confusion and unsightliness." Those opposing it are Commissioners Dressel and Evans. A watered down ordinance requiring the posting of signs on parking lots was adopted in 1957.
