The Men Have Their Say on Flowers

"One of the most beautiful shows I have seen," raved one. "Thoroughly enjoyed it. With all the beautiful homes and gardens in Coral Gables, the community benefits from these shows," commented another. These are the respective reactions of Dr. Franklin S. Evans and George Wilson, city commissioners, who were among the 4,000 persons from 28 states attending the Coral Gables Garden Club Annual Flower Show two weeks ago at the University of Miami Armory. "I was impressed with the size, profusion of colorful flowers and the number of participants in the show, and I commend the president Mrs. Malcolm Lovell for her promotion and cultural endeavors," Dr. Evans continued. "We felt the show was a success and we are looking forward to presenting another one next year," said Mrs. Lovell. "We were particularly proud of our rose display. All the roses were grown in this area and many of them by our club members." The total income will not be assessed until the monthly meeting Feb. 26th but the profits from the show have already been earmarked for a garden center building fund. "If we had a garden center we would be better able to serve the public and offer courses in gardening and all its affiliated activities. One of the present club duties is to help with plant identification and culture in the community," the president said. Last year, the club appeared before the City Commission and were referred to the Planning Board, which is favorable to the idea. "We hope some day to have a provision for a garden club which would reflect Coral Gables as a cultural center. Business is business but we need also an uplifting quality or culture and I believe the garden club would provide this," Commissioner Evans said. "I am interested in seeing the garden club have a place of their own. Many retired people from the North would be drawn here because of the active and enthusiastic interest in gardening. "The problem is selecting a location which will be suitable to both parties," Commissioner Wilson added. Top door prize went to Mrs. T. M. McClure of 5335 Orduna Dr., who received a $50 gift certificate from Daniels. Second prize winner was Mrs. William Friedemann of 3246 Riveria Dr., Mrs. L. R. Johnston of 6901 Trinofo St., won third door prize.
