Over Lunch, Fine Arts Plus a Fine Time
By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor The Coral Gables Woman's Club held its annual Fine Arts Breakfast last Friday and called it "Drifting into New Horizons." It was, literally, a colorful affair. The long tables were spread with sea-green fish nets, sea shells of all sizes and even some sand. There were large green and azure fans, made of "sea stuff," at the ends. Adding to the decor were goldfish in their bowls. Place cards were in black and white with a pen sketch of sailboats on the main. The food was nautical, too — creamed shrimp in sauce in sea nests of noodles, followed by sea-green chiffon pie. Fine arts, the work of the club's members, could be viewed before or after the luncheon. Dozens of pictures were on exhibit. Violet (Mrs. John) Bolender, 434 Amalfi Ave., was showing her second year of study with the classes (once a week) at the club. "First you make a sketch in charcoal," she said, "then fill in with the colors." Peg, (Mrs. Raymond) Lipe, 818 Majorca Ave., also had a framed tropical flower oil, on display. Mrs. Maude Preston Doughty, 4260 SW 11th St., and a veteran club member, had her display of painted bottles. A bust-size, framed oil of a clown with a big red nose, attracted a lot of attention. Guests at the luncheon included Coral Gables Mayor Robert L. Searle, and Mrs. Searle; Mrs. E. D. Pearce of Miami, third vice president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Mrs. Frank Martin, 3508 Anderson Rd., now corresponding secretary of the FFWC; Mrs. W. C. Mehrtens, 1441 SW 11th St., president of the Dade County Federation of Women's Clubs. Mrs. John H. Worley, club president presided at the head table, also there was Mrs. William Cox, fine arts chairman. Guests included Dr. Elmer E. Solem, professor of drama at the UM since 1956, who resides with his wife and two young daughters at 5960 SW 47th St. He was planning to buy one of the gold fish bowls at 50 cents for his daughters. "I think they are ready for fish, they have turtles now." All of the sea shells were on sale too. Mollie Turner, who sat to our left, was quite late. Seems she couldn't get her car out at her TV studio since they were bulldozing. Someone took the keys to her car saying, "I'll get your car out," and vanished. Molly was then loaned a car from a fellow staffer. She came out the Trail. "I know when I got to Douglas entrance, the big, old Spanish-type building, I could drive under the big arch right on to the door of the club." She found out the hard way, how quickly land marks can change. After lunch, the drama division of the Fine Arts department put on a one act play, The Universal Language written and directed by Pat (Mrs. Gene) Gabriel who also played the part of "Binnie," in the story of how women can gossip. Pat was the winner of the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs statewide contest on play writing. Others in the cast were Mary Franzino, who studies with Dr. Solem; Freddie Burt, Dottie Evans and Eunice Anderson. THERE WAS EVERYTHING from decorated bottles (foreground) to paintings last week at the 14th annual luncheon of the Fine Arts division of the Coral Gables Woman's Club. Talking about the exhibits are chairmen of divisions within Fine Arts. Left to right are, art appreciation, Mrs. Maude Preston Doughty, 4260 SW 11th St.; art, Mrs. James W.
