Dr. Crane Swaps His Column For Pulpit

The congregation at Coral Gables' First Methodist got a surprise Sunday before last. Looking out from the pulpit was a face familiar to them through The Miami Herald where he writes a syndicated column. Guest preacher was Dr. George W. Crane, long-time friend of Dr. John H. Hanger, pastor. Dr. Crane's column of count-1 appears in 250 newspapers and has a potential readership of 50 million. The night before, Dr. Crane sat down to dinner at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Hanger at 2901 Granada Blvd. He had chicken, ham, stuffed squash, green beans and avacado salad. After dinner, Dr. Crane showed his magic tricks for about two hours to Dr. Hanger's family and friends. "This was the cutest," Dr. Hanger said, singling out one of the tricks. "He (Dr. Crane) would go up to one of the girls and say, 'I bet you a dime I can kiss you without touching you.' "And then he would kiss the girl on the cheek and say, 'Oh, oh, I touched you?'" The two girls were Dr. Hanger's 14-year-old daughter, Genie, a ninth grader at Ponce de Leon Junior High, and a daughter of one of Dr. Hanger's friends. Dr. Hanger and Dr. Crane met 15 years ago. Dr. Hanger then was pastor of a church in Fort Lauderdale, and asked the columnist to be a guest speaker. Coincidentally, Dr. Crane was in town that weekend to speak at a church in Fort Lauderdale when he accepted Dr. Hanger's request to come to Coral Gables. At First Methodist on Sunday, Dr. Crane spoke on "Why Jesus Came to the World" at the first morning service. During the late service, he spoke on "Why the Bible Is the World's Best Seller."
