Mandatory 7:25 a.m. Classes Set For Crowded Cavaliers This Fall
Because Coral Gables High, built for 2,200 students, will have an expected enrollment of 3,500 this September, the school will then shift for the first time to a three-session schedule. Assistant principal of curriculum Joseph De Church said the schedules would run: Seniors ... 7:25 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Juniors ... 8:25 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Sophomores ... 9:25 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. "There's only one purpose," said De Joseph in explaining the new sessions, "that is to solve the problem of enrollment. "Our school is built for only 2,200 and ... a partial solution is better use of the facilities." This year, there are already 7:25 a.m. classes. But the students have volunteered to come this early. Next September, it's mandatory, said De Joseph. De Joseph said the School Board has indicated it plans eventually to put all Dade County High Schools on this three-session schedule. Those schools already with such sessions, De Joseph said, are Southwest Miami High, Hialeah High and North Miami High. The new sessions, in essence, are supposed to leave more classrooms available and ease congestion. With the old system, all three grades were in the school the same time. With the new arrangement, the students will be arriving and leaving at three different times.
Rader Study Confidential
The City Commission took another look at the Rader and Associates report Tuesday and sent its authors back to do some homework. A confidential stamp was placed on the report—a study of high rise and other zoning problems in Coral Gables—several weeks ago when Rader presented a preliminary version to the Commission. Arnold W. Eckhoff, a partner in Rader, appeared before the Commission at a conference meeting Tuesday to discuss the report before it is made final and published. The Commission had a critique on the report, turned over other comments of the Planning and Zoning Boards, and asked for a final draft by mid-April. A series of public hearings on the findings will be scheduled later.
