SCOUT BILL ANDERSON HELPS
For Youth Center Legion Has Need Of Landscape Help
The call is out for a landscape architect. With a lot of elbow grease and a lot more hope, American Legion Post No. 98 and Boy Scout Troop No. 43, which they sponsor, are trying to put a new face on the Youth Center's War Memorial. But they need someone with landscaping knowhow said Ed Deering, past Post commander. The Memorial is a shrub-lined patio with an empty pond and a blue tile wall. On the wall are plaques which bear names of Gables men who served and those who died in World War II. What needs to be done, Deering said, is to fill in the former pond and make it a rock garden. But the group wants some expert advice on where to go from there, Deering said. If you're interested, you can contact Deering at HI 3-7600. The Post and Scouts are donating their time and money. Also badly in need of repair and replacement are some of the name-bearing plaques, which said Deering, have rusted and deteriorated. This Saturday, the Post and Scout work force will be at the Memorial doing what they can to spruce up the place. Legionaires who worked on the project last Saturday were Deering, Bill Swinney, Boy Scout chairman for the Post, and Bob Devlin, sergeant-at-arms. Boy Scouts, under the direction of Scoutmaster Tom Greenway, were Bill Anderson, Mike Sanz, Tom Relly and Roger Harden.
Huddle On Bus Benches
Metro Zoning officials are slated to huddle with bus bench owners to explain the law on placement of benches, according to Zoning Administrator Robert Cook. A survey was ordered recently by the county manager's office to determine how many bus benches were illegally placed along county streets and highways. The report isn't in yet on that phase of violations, Cook said, but inspectors found 63 benches without permits, 34 that had to be relocated and two on private property. About five companies are involved in the survey.

City Hesitates on Sewer Tap
(Editorial on page 4) The Gables City Commission decided to take another look at the proposal to tie in a proposed South Miami laundry into its sewer system through the South Miami Hospital lines. Commissioners Tuesday heard Dr. James Lyons and Jack Mitchell, who represented the South Miami Professional Building, owners of the hospital building, deny that the building pumps are inadequate to handle the proposed load as indicated by City engineers last week. The building corporation, which rents space to the hospital, owns the sewer line. The corporation pays the City of Coral Gables in order to have the sewage come into the South Dixie Highway disposal plant across from University Inn. The commission sent the proposal back to City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. and City Attorney Ted Semple for further study and recommendation. Only last week the Commission had reversed an earlier decision to approve the Wash Bowl proposal on the advice of its engineers, M. H. Connell and Associates and on the allegation that the proposal had been misrepresented as being supported by the hospital. However, the picture had changed this week, with Dr. Lyons and Mitchell both claiming that their conversations with this city's engineers indicated a different conclusion. Hospital attorney George B. Thompson, who won the reversal last week after he pointed out that administrators were firmly against the move, told the commission that proposed expansion of the hospital would be jeopardized by the laundry proposal. Meanwhile, it has developed that a complicated system of use would be entailed to permit the laundry to empty its storage tanks between use by the hospital. And South Miami is attempting to untangle legal technicalities to permit the sewer line under a franchise agreement rather than by ordinance as it had sought to do earlier.
