You Sleep, I Write Is Success' Secret

By JUNE GRAY Woman's Editor The secret of our success lies in being able to separate our business life from our domestic life, say William and Ellen Hartley, a successful husband and wife writing team, who live at 5747 SW 82nd St. Although the couple have adjoining studies, they only have a space large enough to talk through or push things through. To get into each other's study, they must go through the garage. "We often argue furiously, but our work would be futile if we didn't," they both agree. The Hartleys were married in 1957 and started working together in 1958. A former advertising woman, Mrs. Hartley said she slipped into her present work quite easily. They are kept so busy, between the two of them they often work 24 hours a day seeing each other only when one is going to bed and the other one to work. The Hartleys are essentially magazine assignment writers. They do not have time to do any free lance writing. Their latest book, "Your Important Years," was done at the request of James Bryans, editor of Popular Library. Material for the book, which deals with the years after retirement, had been gathered over a five year period. "We had not planned to write a book," Mr. Hartley said, "but had talked to the editor of Pageant magazine about an article. He happened to mention this to Bryans at a breakfast, and Bryans called us requesting a book. "He called last Nov. 15 and wanted the book by Jan. 15. Due to our extensive research, we had only to contact the president of the American Medical Association for their latest information and then write the book." According to the authors, the best advice the book gives is to get over the idea that chronological age is of any importance. When a man becomes 65, he does not automatically become incapable of work. Mr. Hartley pointed out that the economic power of this group will increase since they live longer lives due to medical science. They are consumers and taxpayers, and they just have jobs to support themselves. If jobs are not provided for them, a growing group of young people will have to support them in taxes. He added that South Florida has a more wholesome attitude toward retired people than any other area. Local industry is making use of the talent and business know-how of the retired persons which the climate has attracted here. Mrs. Hartley was born in Germany and brought up bilingual. She first came to the States in 1948. Mr. Hartley formerly was executive editor of Redbook Magazine. AT WORK on their next magazine article are the husband and wife writer-team, Ellen and William Hartley. Canal Owner Requests Parley With Metro

J. J. Lamb, owner of a controversial stretch of the Coral Gables Canal, has asked Metro to sit down and talk about the County's suit to unblock his dam. County Attorney Darrey Davis said Monday that Lamb asked for the conference after being served with suit papers Oct. 25. No conference date has been set, however, after Lamb's attorneys indicated he was ill and unable to appear immediately. Filing of the suit had been delayed while Lamb was out of town and could not be located. Davis, meanwhile, has asked Metro Water Control to contact property owners abutting the canal to get their help. The County seeks to have the earth dam, located a short distance east of the railroad tracks and the canal, removed and the right to go in and clean up the water hyacinths and debris and restore free flow of water.
