Granada Bids Up Again

Bids on furnishing equipment for the new Granada Golf Course Club House and Pro Shop were rejected 4-1 Tuesday by the City Commission. The Commission then ordered readvertising for new bids with two-way bids — with and without such items as coffee makers, ice cream freezers, refreshment coolers. Last week the Commission deferred action on the bids when it could not agree on the method of including electrical work which some of the contractors had provided for and others had not. Apparent low bidder last week was Edward Don & Co. with a base bid of $8,929. Other bidders were Bill Woodward Equipment Co., $9,315; Kurman Company Inc., $9,673; and Jack Conkle, $10,840.

Bring Your Family Sunday to Ceremony

The Coral Gables People-to-People Program will join Sunday in celebrating the 151st anniversary of the independence of its sister-city, Cartagena, Colombia. There will be a ceremony at Cartagena Plaza in Coral Gables at 1 p.m. People-to-People members will be joined by Coral Gables city officials and by members of the local Colombian colony, including the Colombian Consul-General, Hugo Nicholls. Members of the Latin American consular corps have also been invited. The public is welcome. The program will consist of an address by a Gables official, followed by a program of folk dances presented by a group of young Colombians. Cartagena Plaza, located at the junction of Le Jeune, Sunset and Old Cutler Roads, has been redesigned and re-landscaped during the past few months. It forms the setting for a monumental pair of old shoes, formed in concrete. These are replicas of even bigger shoes, cast in bronze, which are a much-loved landmark in Cartagena. Coral Gables was the first city to affiliate with a South American sister-city under the people-to-people program initiated by President Eisenhower. There have been several exchanges of visits between citizens of the two cities. A group of Cartageneros had planned to visit Coral Gables during this week, but the tense Cuban situation dictated a postponement.
