She Now Hurries to Get Behind; Manages 2 Doctors and 8 Children
By JUNE GRAY Woman's Editer "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get." Patients reading this sign over the desk of Mrs. Paul Brick, office manager for Drs. Walter W. Sackett Jr. and John W. Dix, disbelieve it as they watch how smoothly the office is run by this efficient woman. She is expecting her ninth child the middle of next month. Although Mrs. Brick did not begin work until last February, she has known Dr. Sackett since he delivered her second child, Margaret, 18 years ago. Her last four children have been raised on Dr. Sackett's six-hour feeding schedule. Twelve-year-old Mary Teresa was the 13th baby to be raised on this schedule. Now, 1,300 have participated in the series. Mary Teresa was fed cereal before leaving the hospital, and when she was three weeks old, she was put on three solid meals a day and given a bottle afterwards. "This is the beauty of the system," Mrs. Brick said. "I was not bleary eyed in the morning since I had no night feedings to get me up. Two feedings during the day were also eliminated." By the time the baby comes home, it is pretty well adjusted to being fed every six hours. It may cry a little at first, but soon sleeps from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. "I had to exercise all my self control in the beginning to keep from running to Mary Teresa when she cried," Mrs. Brick commented. "It aroused all the mother instinct in me. I can see why a young mother with her first child would have a hard time adjusting because she has all her time to devote to the baby. "But I agree with Dr. Sackett that this system of feeding seems to make a happier, better adjusted baby. They certainly do not cry because they learn that crying does not get them what they want." Mrs. Brick plans to raise this baby just as she has the last four. Since she already has five girls, the family has decided they want a boy so that the other three sons will not feel they are in a minority. The Bricks had no misgivings about their children's health. "We both had so much faith in Dr. Sackett for the care he has given our entire family that we have faith in anything he suggests," Mrs. Sackett said. Dr. Sackett has been a general practitioner for approximately 25 years and in the same building at 2500 Coral Way for 17 years. He and Dr. Dix have practiced together for more than 20 years. Mrs. Brick says she often wakes up in the middle of the night worrying about some of the patients' problems. "I cannot work around people without becoming involved. After I get to know them ,they become my friends as well as a patient." All the children help Mrs. Brick with the house work. Each week the jobs are alternated and on Saturday they all pitch in. "We are fortunate to have a big house with five bedrooms and a sleeping porch," Mrs. Brick said. They live at 2534 Indian Mound Trail. Her husband was for many years an area Boy Scout executive. He now sells insurance for the American Automobile Association. -Times Photo by RAYMOND LANG MRS. PAUL BRICK . . . office manager
