SMOKE SIGNALS

By Paul Brick Dist. Scout Exec. Public recognition of a job well done went to 15 adult Boy Scouting volunteers last week. Certificates were presented to H. Graham Mozealous, 7257 SW 21st St.; Capt. Louis White, 5138 SW 5th St.; Robert Bunting, 8761 SW 42nd Ter.; James G. Romes, 371 Flagami Blvd. George Klein, 6875 SW 17th St.; John Barrett, 60 SW 50th Ave.; J. R. Hawkins, 506 Almeria; Charles Cox, 1001 SE 1st St.; William Lesser, 7201 SW 80th St. Jim Voss, 8575 SW 127th St.; B. B. Rouse, 5401 SW 99th Ave.; Richard R. Peebles, 5758 SW 32nd St.; William F. Powell, 6450 SW 43rd St.; Edward R. Roy, 2035 SW 59th Ave., and Don Tener, 3320 SW 97th Ave. They serve as head Merit Badge counselors, supervising hundreds of other men helping Scouts to gain the information necessary to earn some 106 different Merit Badges in the South Dade area. AN UNUSUAL plea for help for adult Scouters who will work with the District Training Committee, came at the District Committee meeting recently. Six "pallbearers" entered the meeting bearing a full sized casket, having a sign on its side "Help the Training Committee - Don't Let Training Die!" And stepping out of this real casket the Training Chairman, Lewis Stephens, asked for more help - but he had just lost his voice, due to flu. "BOYS, BOYS, boys - everywhere" may be heard in our neighborhoods, as Boy Scouts, Cubs, and Explorers visit homes of the southwest area soliciting old clothes, and usable household items for the Goodwill Industries. Boys will leave large paper bags at each home on Saturday, April 15, and return on Saturday, April 22 to collect the filled bags to return to this worthy organization. TIME OFF - at the University of Miami, means time to do volunteer work in Scouting for Dr. Karl Voores, who heads up the Scout Leaders Roundtable monthly. Dr. Voores has served many years and continues helping. He serves as an Assistant District Commissioner. A HEALTHY "new baby" in the Scouting family, is Pack 280, Blue Lakes Elementary Parent Teachers Association. Paul T. Apt heads up the program as institutional representative, while Robert Goalstone, serves as chairman of the Pack Committee. Cubmaster Arthur Levy and assistant James Bean are fortunate in working with Malvina Rosenblum, Pat Franklin, Dorothy Schwartz, Mrs. Artie Leonard, and Jean Cournoyer - all den mothers - and assistants of the 47-boy Cub Pack.

Dr. Higley Is Elected SM Rotary President

Dr. Bruce Higley, an orthodontist and a five-year member of South Miami Rotary Club, has been elected president of that organization for the coming year. Dr. Higley replaces South Miami merchant Joe Dussault. Other officers elected include Vance Morgan, executive vice president, and Carl Eloff, sergeant-at-arms. Dr. Higley is a past director of the South Miami Jaycees, a past director of South Miami Chamber of Commerce and a former secretary-treasurer of the business and professional division of the South Miami District Chamber of Commerce. Recently elected members of the club's board of directors are Omar Stang, Larry Craig, Clyde Crabtree and Homer Rohm. Installation of officers is planned for Friday, June 30, at Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club. Dr. Higley and his wife reside at 5701 SW 83rd St. They are building a new home in Snapper Creek Estates.

Riverside Banker Chosen High Officer

Tully F. Dunlap, president of Riverside Bank, Miami, was elected second vice president which places him in line to become president in two years of the Florida Bankers Association. The association met recently in Miami.
