SM Rezoning Appeals Denied
South Miami Council was in no mood to offer variances last week. The city fathers turned down or tabled each of three rezoning or special use permit proposals although the city's advisory Planning and Zoning Board had recommended one of the variances. Tabled was a resolution granting a variance to Paul Carter permitting the construction of a 65 by 15 foot addition to the rear of a building at 5840 South Dixie Highway. No hardship was shown, according to Councilman Joe Kline. The item was tabled to clarify the advisory board's recommendation. Some councilmen were reticent to grant Carter a permit because of a long-proposed alley in the rear of the building between Sunset Drive and South Dixie Highway. The addition, according to recent plans, would encroach on setbacks being held for the alley. In another petition, council turned down the special use permit application of C. E. Ayers, a would-be buyer of a residence at 7641 SW 62nd Ave. Ayers plans to use the residence for an insurance office. The third application, from J. L. Hawkes, 5930 SW 80th St., requested setback variances for the construction of an addition of a home. Council did not reach a decision on this petition.
