Meter Girls To Appeal Firings

The two meter checkers fired by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. last week for refusing to explain discrepancies on overtime parking tickets have asked for a trial before the city's trial board. "I regard these discrepancies as material and import- t [?]" Robinson told Attorney William Pruitt, counsel for Mrs. Shirley Searle and Norweida Barrow. "This city cannot, and will not, tolerate employees who not only are guilty of discrepancies in important matters but are also guilty of wilful insubordination, and absolute a stubborn refusal, not only to explain but to make any comment or answer any questions regarding their work," Robinson said. The city manager listed more than 40 tickets for each girl in which he said a discrepancy existed between the original ticket and a third [?] The girls have countered the accusations by charging that they had been placed on a quota system and that no matter how many tickets they wrote it wasn't enough. Both Robinson and Finance Director Kenneth Allyn, under whose department the met checkers were recently transferred from the Police Department, denied the statement. No trial date has been set.

Pre-Cast Work Aids Westbrooke Club

A new country club under construction in southwest Miami will be completed in record time through the use of pre-cast concrete. Sheldon Kay and Harold Moss, developers of Westbrooke Country Club, 8500 SW 8th St., said this week that when the pre-cast units are completed about May 1, the entire structural part of the main building will be "in the air" in less than a week's time. Pre-cast concrete has been used in this country for about 10 years and much longer in Europe. Moss said that after the pre-cast units now being manufactured in Dade County, are delivered and placed into position, the glass which forms the walls of the building can be installed. The foundation has already been laid. He said that a novel feature of Westbrooke will be that the second floor of the main building, which will house the main ballroom, dining room and lounges, will have "uninterrupted space." He said that because of the properties of pre-cast material, no additional columns would be needed in the interior section of the building. The million-dollar recreational facility will be completed in June.
