Five Southwest Seniors Are Scholarship Nominees

By LAURA HENRY School Correspondent Five Southwest seniors have been nominated for the University of Miami scholarships. Based on test scores and high school records, the following students will compete: Anne Beville, Gary Glick, Bill Griffith, Beverly Unick, and Barbara Huhn. Scholarship recipients receive $900 a year for a three year period. Winners will be announced in May. GIRL'S SOFTBALL Tomorrow (Friday) the annual softball tournament will be held at Curtis Park. Girls on the team include Mary Chapman, Carsie Cotton, Barbara Fisk, Sandy Green, Marty Goeddent, Ann Horman, Kathy Sorensen, Dolores Laws, Richeen Laws, Kristine Pearson, Janet Reagin, Carolyn Shipski, Judy Smith, Anita Sneed, Jo Ann Vineyard, Shirley Dube, and Manager-Maggie Plasman. SCIENCE FAIR Southwest students received three honors in the South Florida Regional Science Fair this year. All three received honorable mentions. Catherine Chievara, junior, in the Science Research Program, received her award in the category of Zoology (other than man). Her project was designed to test the intelligence of goldfish. Senior Dave Klapper won in geology, weather and conservation. His project concerned the refinement of gold and platinum. Dave is also a science research student. Richard Marks, also a senior and in the science research program, built a fuel cell. He entered in the field of chemistry and nuclear physics. STUDENT COUNCIL Three members of the Stucil attended the State Student Council Convention at Tallahassee. Don Barber, Russell Bizette, and Julie Heisser, accompanied Winston Jones. President Barber gave the winning nominating speech for the candidate for vice president, a student from Winter Haven. Southwest holds the office of president in the District VI which has 35 schools. SPELLING CONTEST Spelling drills and tests really paid off for senior Joel Hartman, Southwest's champion in the Dade County Spelling Bee. Joel represented Southwest Monday. Champion from the 11th grade was Cheryl Hankins. Bobbye Myers represented the 10th grade. FUTURE TEACHERS The Future Teachers held their annual banquet in the Coral Gables High School Cafeteria. Southwest students attending this affair were Bunny Schwartz, Judy Lebar, Harriet Charnin, Rhea Goldman, Shari Saslaw, Vicke Lebar, Maxine Smith, Linda Halpern, Gary Glick, Lois Lincoln, Joyce Dew, Howard Watson, Margaret Lasher, Suise Bender, Sunny Walker, and Geri Blohm.

Morrises See Riot

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Morris, 8445 S.W. 54th Ct., caught a riot in Libson on their recent jet plane trip around the world. They returned Sunday, after being away seven weeks. The riot occured at the embassy in Portugal, and the Morrises' apartment building was directly across the way. They took movies of the affair from an apartment across the hall.

Town Club Fete

The Town Club of South Miami will present its annual chicken-barbecue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the South Miami Riding Club, S.W. 92nd Ave. at Kendall Ave.
