Seniors Sad, Glad with Graduation

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent A day of gladness tinged with sadness is scheduled for 670 Southwest seniors who will graduate at exercises in the Dade County Auditorium June 11, at 2 p.m. Speakers from the senior class will be Wayne Wever and Harriet Charnin. The Rev. Fred Cole, minister of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, will give the invocation. The senior chorus, directed by Mrs. Margaret deSola, will sing "Ours Is the World," by Hyaden Morgan, and an ensemble will present "A Graduation Prayer," by Samuel C. Yehres. Dr. Lee A. Aber, assisted by a member of the Dade County Board of Public Instruction, will present the diplomas. The senior class gathered for one last time previous to graduation on Class Night, June 2, in the cafeteria. At this predominantly musical program, the Senior Class Last Will and Testament, the Prophecy, and the Class Song was presented in a booklet entitled "Eagle's Tales." The will and testament were written by Berenice Galinis, chairman; Mary Lou Hoopes, Nicki Steadman, Anita Sneed and Vicki Fratus. Typists were Sandra Lacki, Judy Roper, Rhoda Vodin, and Bonnie Anderson. Chairman John Self, assisted by Mary McEnery, Marsha Shackelford, Laura Henry and Jim Dodds prophesied the future of the seniors, while Gary Glick and Harriet Charnin collaborated on the senior song. The capping ceremony also took place on that night. After the program a dance was held in the cafeteria for the seniors. PROM One lucky boy and girl will be crowned King and Queen of the Sophomore Prom, June 9 in the school cafeteria from 8:30 to 12 p.m. Finalists for queen are Kathi Garry, Jerri Knight, Judy Peeples and Judy Basset. The theme of the prom is "Apple Blssom Time in Paris" with Judy Peeples as head of the decorations committee assisted by Linda Prusoff, Ruth Ellen Morgan, Kathi Garry, Dennis Jeffers, Helen Hancock, Blythe Bonnabel, Bob Ledee, Sharon Heck and Carolyn Hancock. BIG BOAT John Mastrangelo has been working in woodshop for the past 10 months on a 16-foot runabout boat. The craft, which cost $700, won third place in a woodshop contest under the division "Building a Boat From a Blueprint." The varsity squad for 1961 is Patsye Doyle, captain; Juliette Heisser, co-captain; Barbara Dal Pra, Connie Feltham, Carolyn Keehn, Judy Hodge, Gretchen Gren, Kathy Nathanson, Frances Opitz, Judy Miller, Linda Goldsmith, Pam Goodman and Susan Dorris. South Miami Metro Offer Seen Okayed

(Continued from page 1) Metro says if the waste collection price is lowered for these people, other county residents will be discriminated against. South Miami offered the deal to Metro because the city considers the area to be serviced the logical South Miami service area according to a master plan completed for South Miami last year. South Miami can service this area at a lower cost than Metro, the city contends. The city also maintains that if this logical service area was annexed to South Miami, there would be lower fire insurance rates for county residents and practically no ad valorem taxes for either those annexed or those presently in the corporate limits. South Miami's ad valorem taxes are decreasing each year. City officials reason that if the area west of the city was annexed, cigaret, franchise and utility taxes would give the city enough income to maintain needed appropriations.
