Soft Soap Becomes The Hard Sell And All Smells Sweetly

By JOE MORRIS Correspondent Mrs. Blanca Osorio Shedd, a Colombian by birth and an American now by marriage, owes her command of the English language to the delightful smell of a bar of soap. Dr. Ralph Boggs, international student director of the University of Miami, took a bath in Belem, Brazil, one night two years ago and the bar of soap he used changed the course of this lady's life. Returning from Rio de Janerio to Miami, Dr. Boggs stopped over for a short visit in the jungle town of Belem, nearly a hundred miles south of the Equator. Sitting in his hotel bathtub, he was delightfully impressed with the sudsy, soft and sweet smelling soap named, "Phebo." The label read: Odor do Rosas para toilette. Believing the Biblical quo-tation, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness," the doctor slipped a dozen cakes in his suitcase for some Saturday night bathing in the States. When the last soap suds disappeared he wrote the soap manufacturer in Belem and said, "Ship me more of that sweet smelling soap." The newspaper there thought it strange that an American would order soap from South America for use in the United States so they printed a story about the "Clean American" who was connected with an American university. Mrs. Shedd read the article and remembered it. Some months later she left Brazil to visit her husband's family in Texas. She stopped in Miami to talk to the "Clean American" and maybe soft-soap him some way into giving a scholarship to her son. But the tables turned. Dr. Boggs personally conducted her on a deluxe tour of the campus then introduced her to international student counsel-or Dr. Walter Allen who re-called living in Kuling, China, one summer with Mrs. Shedds father-in-law. This coincidence convinced her to cancel her trip to Texas and she signed up to study intensive English herself. This week she finished her first semester and starts straightway into the summer school session. She lives at 131 S.W. 52nd Ct. If you are ever on campus at UM and someone near you has the Odor do Rosas, just walk up to him and say, "Dr. Boggs, I presume!"

Sessa, director of the Miami Public Library, to discuss feasibility of setting up bookmobile service in the Olympia Heights area. Representatives from all the area churches and PTA presidents have been invited to attend the meeting, set for 10 a.m. June 16. The group plans to petition Metro to get the services. A luncheon in honor of the Olympia Heights Elementary faculty will be held June 15, 1 p.m. at the Old Hickory restaurant. New officers are Mrs. Tom Ruddy, president; Mrs. J. L. Cook, first vice president; Mrs. Roy Hood, second vice president; Mrs. Morton Lashman, recording secretary; Mrs. Lucille Elliott; corresponding secretary, and Mrs. John Williamson, treasurer.

Tony Grows Big Plants

Continued from page 1 liberal quantities of lime all over the ground near his plants. Add plenty of water and a few more secrets and you have Paul Bunyan-size plants. But Tony does not think much of Florida as a place to grow plants or to spend your early life. Married at 42, he has no children, but if he had he would not have brought them here, he said. "Florida isa good place to come ana die," said Tony. Or for those who are seriously ill. Tony, gassed and shellshocked fighting for the United States in World War I, doesn't look like he's ready to die. "You gotta go to sleep somma time," said Tony. But he has too many plants and trees blooming to indicate resignation.

Will City Bless This Shelter?

A fall out or bomb shelter already constructed to a Coral Gables firm near the southeast corner of Le Jeune Road and South Dixie Highway will have to face a public hearing before the Zoning Board before it can have the final blessing of the city. The shelter, erected by Art Construction Co., was built on Lot 27, Block 95, Riviera Section, Part 2. Presently zoned residential, the firm seeks a CA commercial zoning. Art Construction proposes to offer the shelter to the public for training or demonstration use.
