Florida Power Gets Cardiac Home Site
Florida Power and Light Company's plan to construct offices at the southwest corner of West Flagler Street and Le Jeune Road suits battling residents there just fine. The offices, for executive and engineering and other personnel, would replace the present National Children's Cardiac Home, which is moving to "hospital row" in Miami. A plan to erect a Grand Way discount center at the site raise the ire of neighbors so much that they threatened to tie up the new rezoning proposal by appealing all the way to the Supreme Court. The fight was led by Mrs. Gerry Bernhard, 4225 SW Third St., recently elected president of the West Flagler-Le Jeune Road Homeowners Civic Association. The Florida Power and Light Company proposal to build offices to accommodate 406 employes and parking for 250 cars still faces the obstacle of a previously filed law suit and a Planning Board meeting June 12. But since homeowners are reported "100 per cent behind the plan," Mrs. Bernhard said, no difficulty is expected. The organization has also fought building of a new gas station across the street from the Cardiac Hospital and a beauty parlor at 600 SW Le Jeune Rd.
