South Miami Roundup

with Ed Knight VACATIONS — They are just around the corner for most everyone. The kiddies will be out of school any day now, the college set will be unloading their luggage soon and Dad will be checking out the office one of these weeks. For my week of lounging, I've chosen a cottage on the powdery white sand of St. Petersburg Beach on Florida's west coast. But it won't come until the middle of July. LIKE MOST vacation spots, this one was highly recommended by some of our neighbors. "But you've gotta make your reservation now," they said "'cause the cottages are mostly filled by the first of June." Well, sir, the reservation is in and the deposit has been made. The trip will mean a six-hour drive through the Everglades to Naples, up the west coast to Ft. Myers, Punta Gorda and Sarasota and over the Skyline Bridge which connects the counties of Manatee and Pinellas across Tampa Bay. I am looking forward to it. * * * DADE COUNTY last week took one of its most sought-after, timely and appreciated steps since its inception in 1958. Metro's going to get some organized recreation under way in the unincorporated areas—and the residents or the children don't mind this a bit. Using the facilities of 10 elementary schools, the program will cost the county about $129,000 annually. But this is just a lot of figures. WHAT IS important is that the program will be directed by qualified recreation leaders employed by Metro. There will be regular hours (9 to 5 daily and 9 to 12 Saturdays) throughout the summer and the young-uns will be divided into age groups for their part in the program. Metro will be using only ten elementary school sites initially but there will be more later on. THERE ARE only two schools in the Southwest being used for the program at first. Too bad there are not more schools out of approximately a dozen that are available. The schools being used are Banyan, 3060 SW 85th Ave., and Royal Palm. 4200 SW 112th Ct. Any child who has completed, the first grade will be eligible for participation. Better hurry down and get your youngster signed up. AN EVENING program for teenagers and adults will start June 19 on two nights a week at five high schools, including Southwest and Palmetto Highs in our area. This recreation program is something that Metro has needed for a long time. For years youngsters in the unincorporated areas have had to either sponge off the cities for any recreation at all or else seek recreation in vacant lots and in the streets. It's not a health situation to have as great a number of children as live in the county seeking their own means of recreation. SOUTH MIAMI is one city that long ago realized the plight of the county youngsters and has since accepted both city and county boys in its recreation program. It's no secret that more than half of those participating in the South Miami recreation program do not reside in the city. And it works out to everyone's benefit. Many of those fathers who serve as umpires, referees and the like are the dads of the county youngsters. But the bats keep swinging, the boys are kept off the streets and the crime rate is held at a minimum. * * * WANDERING THOUGHTS—What has become of Dadeland Shopping Center? There's a lot of talk about it but little action at the point of North Kendall Dr., South Dixie Highway and the Palmetto Expressway. It's still slated to be the biggest shopping center in these parts, but there has yet been no ground broken . . . There's either too much or too little rain for South Dade's farmers. They moan when there's a drought and cry when we are flooded. But during the recent rain spell all was quiet in South Dade. The rainfall must have been just enough. * * * I'M NEVER lucky when it comes to gas price wars. When such a war erupts I usually find myself with a tank full of gas. This week I drove into a station for my weekly tank of gas. I had the tank filled to the brim. But just after paying for the petrol a service man changed the gas price from 27.9 to 25.9 cents per gallon. Such is life . . . With the number of new stations opening in the southwest there are likely to be more price wars in the future. The economic law of supply and demand is making itself felt in the service station competition. And the customers reap the profits.
