NEW BAPTIST CHURCH IS READY
Building Is Slow In October
Only three new homes were started in October, illustrating the slew up in residential development in Coral Gables for that month. One duplex and a four-unit apartment completed the total of living unit construction. October construction on 184 permits totalled $783,962. The 10-month total is still ahead of the same period last year, but October 1961 proved less active that the same month last year. Still more than $1 million ahead of last year, the total through October was $12,746,561 — compared to $11,543,835 last year. Miscellaneous construction accounted for 150 of the 184 permits issued and $308,697. Only three new residences were started for $236,850; 19 additions, $117,093; one duplex, $38,000; seven alterations; $36,005; one four-unit apartment, $31,009; one seawall, $20,017; and two pools, $6,300.
2nd 'Child' of University Baptists to Dedicate New Chapel
The University Baptist Church will dedicate its second Chapel building Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at 97th Avenue and 64-66th Streets, S.W. The Gateway Chapel is the second child of the mother church, the other being Sweetwater Chapel in Sweetwater, Fla. On Dec. 4, 1954, the University Baptist Church began a mission Sunday School in the Fairchild School building on 57th Avenue. The work continued in the community until July of last year when, because land was unavailable, the church and chapel congregation moved westward to secure a five acre tract of land on 97th Avenue. On Oct. first of last year, the congregation moved to the Blue Lake School building in which services were held until the new building was erected and entered Nov. 5. The new church plant will provide for 250 worshippers and 259 Sunday Schoolers. Separate rooms and buildings are arranged for every school department. The Rev. Earnest Sikes, minister of the Gateway Chapel, will preside over the service and the minister of the Mother Church, Dr. T. Rupert Coleman, will bring the dedicatory message, using as his subject, "The Church's Foundation." Participating in the service will be Rev. Ray Dobbins, superintendent of missions for the Miami Baptist Association, which has shared in the sponsorship of the Chapel, as well as Al J. Lewallen, Chairman of the Church's Extension Committee sponsoring the Chapel, and Earl Faircloth, Chairman of the Deacons and Mr. Ira Haycock, Chairman of the Trustee's of the Mother Church. 250 are enrolled in the Sunday School. The public is invited to share with the two congregations the special service and open house on Sunday afternoon. The architects, O. K. Houstoun & Associates designed the contemporary colonial building and Schafer & Miller Construction Company built it. The total investment in the new branch of the University Church amounts to approximately $80,000.
