She 'Fell' For Jolly Old England The Hard Way
By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter She settled into an easy chair, a French Poodle snuggled in her lap and her son, Danny, 4, gazing up at her from her elbow. "Mommy!" the little boy said plaintively, "I want some tea." Diane, 12, sat quietly near-by. Mrs. Snow smiled. "Dear," she said to the boy, "You're back in America now." The Snow family returned to the Gables recently after almost four years in Camberly, England. Mr. Snow, a Pan American pilot, was assigned to fly air routes in Germany. Mrs. Snow talked the other day about what life is like for an American housewife in England. There, she lived in a 100-year-old house. Now, she resides at 1415 Country Club Prado. "You must shop early in the morning," Mrs. Snow said. She chuckled, "Because when I got up at noon to go shopping, the food was all gone. "The British people get up very early, about 5 a.m. And by 7 a.m., their shopping is done." Camberly had no American-style supermarkets. You had to go to a different store for every item you wanted. You could get a certain meat, say chuck roast, only on Thursdays. On other days, the butcher just didn't have it. You pay your maid 42 cents an hour, a top wage. A laborer makes about $35 a week. There are no American-type refrigerators. Insptad, there's a larder, vented to the outside. Shopping every day and the cool climate make a refrigerator unnecessary. "My first experience going to the store was to buy paraffin," Mrs. Snow said. She wanted to seal jam in some jars. "I went to the store and asked for paraffin and the clerk said 'Beg your pardon, madam?' " 'I want some paraffin,' she repeated. "He told me 'I must go to the ironmonger. I didn't want anything of iron," Mrs. Snow said. "But I went to the ironmonger and told him I wanted some paraffin. 'But madam, what are you going to do with it?' " 'I said I was going to put it on strawberry jam." The ironmonger almost threw a fit. It seems, in British vocabulary, paraffin is not, as we know it, a wax. It's kerosene! "I came down with the measles, a very bad case of measles," she said, her green eyes twinkling. "The day I went out after I got out of bed, George took me to a very old, very quaint pub for dinner. "They had a sign 'Watch your head.' "I was reading the sign and watching my head — not the steps — and the steps left and I went down. "It was very funny at the time. I went into hysterics over it." But Mrs. Snow, while she enjoyed England, left no doubt. It was good to be back home.
