Religion And Schools Is Explained

Non-religious holiday parties and symbols are still permitted in public schools, but those having a religious basis are out, according to Robert B. Turner Jr., Dade County assistant superintendent for general education. The entire question of religion in the public schools is before the Florida Supreme Court, but this is the procedure being followed by the School Board until the case is settled. Turner, in a memorandum to the Coral Gables Elementary School PTA Board, explained the decree handed down by Circuit Court Judge J. Fritz Gordon May 10 following the cases of Chamberlin vs. the School Board and Resnick vs. the School Board. According to Turner, public schools may still hold holiday parties and display Christmas trees and other symbols and decorations which are not religious in nature. But plays around Christmas time depicting the birth of Christ, and around Easter of the Crucifixion of Christ, or Hanukkah Jewish religious ceremonies and other religious holiday ceremonies are not permitted on school property. Judge Gordon's decree permits the creation of religious symbols and their display on a temporary basis and the singing of religious hymns in school and also permits the wearing of religious sumbols by pupils. But the showing of motion pictures which are in some degree religious and which depict various religious happenings, principles, ideals and teachings, are prohibited. The decree does not affect private or parochial schools. Judge Gordon's decision is not being appealed by the School Board, which felt it was a fair one, but the case is far from dead. Neither of the parties who filed suit to end completely all vestiges of religion in the public schools were satisfied with the ruling and appealed the decision to the Florida Supreme Court. And the Council of Churches, which joined the suit as intervenors in the early stages, have also appealed the decision to restore religious practices as they had been permitted before. An early skirmish occurred before the Supreme Court Nov. 6. The Court ordered the filing of briefs by both sides, and there the matter lies.

City Names 2 Architects

Two architects have been named by the Coral Gables City Commission to design two proposed buildings - a new club house at Granada Golf Course and a tennis pro shop at Salvadore Park. They are James Ferguson, who will design the club house, and William Merriam, who will design the tennis pro shop. The buildings are not in this year's budget, but may be built next year.

Dunmire's Engine Analyzer Similar To Television, Aircraft Trouble-Checkers

OTHER EQUIPMENT Other late equipment includes a 1956 model John Bean Visualiner for wheel alignment. From a mirror beside the auto wheel, two circles of light reflect on a calibrated chart, showing exactly how far the wheel is out of line. Variations from 1/4" to 4" can be registered with the highest degree of accuracy. This eliminates the need for time consuming measuring on this job.
