COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight
INDUSTRY, according to those in the know, is coming to South Dade. Beautiful South Dade, with its estates, rambling homes and truck farms soon will be the site of smoke stacks, heavy trucks and polluted streams. ACCORDING to the daily press, South Dade already has been tapped as the site of a 40-million-dollar oil refinery. Chances also are excellent that Aero-jet General, with headquarters in California, will move its operation to South Dade. THE OIL refinery, to be constructed by D. K. Ludwig, owner of one of the largest shipping fleets in the world, will be constructed near Homestead Air Force Base east of South Dixie Highway. THE AERO-JET plant will go to the west of South Dixie Highway near Krome Ave. These two industrial giants together will hire directly or indirectly some 37,000 workers who will earn about 164 million dollars annually. WHILE DADE County is in dire need of industry, it's unfortunate that South Dade has been chosen for these two industries. But the reason for the choice seems obvious. South Dade is the only section of Dade County still undeveloped enough to handle these two industries. IRONICALLY, it is because of South Dade's vastness and undevelopment that industry is coming to plow up the fertile fields and cast a heavy shadow over the palatial residences there. BUT INDUSTRY is where you find it. And inasmuch as Dade County needs jobs for its working force we shall not quibble about the need for industry. But plants of this magnitude and workers of this number bring problems. BUNDLE ALL this together and you call it progress and progress is what this country was founded on. But just how good is this industry for South Dade? The answer to this lies in the age-old question: Is what is good for business good for an entire area? WHO WILL benefit from this industry in South Dade? The businessmen, the banker, the realtor, the supermarket owner will benefit and the little fellow, the guy who has to use South Dixie Highway everyday, will be hurt. THE COMPLEX of South Dade is not suited for industry. All of Dade County, including South Dade has grown so rapidly since World War II that we are just now beginning to unravel some of the problems brought on by the great influx of new residents. THE MAJOR problems lie in highways, housing, zoning, planning and water pollution. To this date South Dade has but one highway fit for high speed travel. That is South Dixie Highway already crowded to the shoulders with white collar workers, who predominate in South Dade, flocking to their offices in downtown Miami. WITH INDUSTRY will come low cost housing, poor planning, a lowering of zoning restrictions and a working element quite uncommon to an area such as South Dade. But the businessman will fare well. He will sell his land more rapidly now. He will increase his bank deposits more readily and look for still more.
