Completion Of By-Pass Seen By June 1961
Construction on the southernmost segment of the Palmetto Road By-Pass west of downtown Miami is now 50 per cent complete. William D. Singer of Coral Gables, State Road Board Member for District Four, said the $2,286,079 project extends from U.S. 1 north 2.7 miles to SW 60th St. In addition to construction of 2.7 miles of multi-lane highway, work on this project includes nine bridges with a combined distance of 2,693 feet. The bridges include two overhead crossings of the Florida East Coast Railway. Troupe Brothers, Inc., of Miami started work on this project in February and expects to have it completed by June of next year. This southern-most segment connects with a 3.013-mile link now 40 percent complete from SW 60th St. north to SW 14th St. These two projects are the only remaining portions of the 24.2-mile Palmetto Road By-Pass yet to be completed, Singer said. Construction was completed from SW 14th St. to NW Eighth St. on Aug. 5 and traffic is now moving on the entire By-Pass.
