Chief Requests Time To Discuss Laxity Charges

Coral Gables Police Chief William Kimbrough has requested an appearance before the City Commission to discuss charges of laxity in his department. The Commission received Kimbrough's request for an appearance Tuesday and directed City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. to determine from Kimbrough the exact nature of his request. Asked To Appear Kimbrough, in a note to Robinson last week, asked to appear before the Commission at an informal conference or at the regular Commission meeting to discuss a Times news story quoting Commissioner Winston W. Wynne as charging that the police department is not enforcing the law. "I don't feel I should get into details of the Times article until I talk to the City Commission," Kimbrough said Wednesday when contacted. Kimbrough said he thought the bad publicity was unjustified. Doesn't Know "Whose fault it is I don't know..." Kimbrough said, but he wanted to clear the air. "I have the records to prove we have one of the best departments in the country," said the chief. Wynne last week repeatedly charged before the City Commission that the Coral Gables Police Department is not enforcing traffic laws. The Gables commissioner, who is due to resign his post in January when he is seated on the Metro Commission, based his charges on reports that fewer traffic tickets were being issued this year compared to a similar period last year.

FOR THIS YOUNG FELLA, Ross Pawliger, Thanksgiving will be a very special day. You see, he was born on Thanksgiving five years ago. And this Thursday, Ross will be 5 years old, the first birthday he's had that fell on Thanksgiving. So as Ross, 8290 SW 61st Ave., dreams about the turkey his mother is preparing, he's also thinking about that birthday cake. How lucky can a fella be?

City Seeks New 'African Queen'

Coral Gables, long a prospect for a new police boat, finally called for bids for a 18-footer last week. The Commission has authorized City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. to get bids on a new craft to replace the broken down "African Queen." Unlike the "Queen" the new boat will be easily transportable by car trailer and will have outboard motors requiring easier maintenance. Mobility of the boat will also make it easier for the city to store and launch. The new police boat will help the city curb vandalism and burglaries along the waterways and limit speeding by boats.
