No, But It Could Be Life Afloat A Problem?

THE SERENITY OF THE SEA is something the Roberts family can enjoy every day on their ship, the "Calypso Queen." It's especially wonderful during the late afternoon as buttery-soft breezes sweep in and the sun sets in the west. Relaxing at the helm of the ship, left to right, are Mrs. Roberts and Laurie, 2; Chris, 13; and Kinipopo, of the several family cats; Mr. Roberts; Corky, 7. On top is Drucie, 10. By GRACE WHIPPLE Life with four children and a husband in one house could mean plenty of activity. With the same cast aboard a boat, it could mean chaos - unless it is the family of Mrs. Bruce Roberts. With her husband, four children, a cat and turtle, Mrs. Roberts lives calmly aboard the 40-foot ketch, "Calypso Queen," at the Dinner Key Marina. Sitting on deck in the relaxing atmosphere of sunshine, water and fresh breezes, she chatted enthusiastically about her sailor's life. Since becoming Mrs. Roberts 15 years ago, the attractive blond and her husband, Bruce, group creative director for the Miami Advertising agency of Bishopric, Green, Fielden, Inc., have spent most of their lives aboard. "Up until that time," confessed Mrs. Roberts, "I had never set foot on a boat." Then the sea fever caught on and the first boat, an 80 foot schooner was succeeded by a power boat and the present ketch. "The children know little else but living on the boat, but lead normal lives," explained Mrs. Roberts. "The older children go to school here in Miami. One difference in their lives is a backyard but with year-round swimming, fishing, gigging, and cruising no one seems to miss it." This too is the general opinion about television, washing machines, and a deluxe model stove - none of which is found in the Roberts boathold. Laundry goes to the laundromat, meals are managed "very well' on a two-burner stove and family ingenuity replaces "Red Skelton" or "Maverick." "In many ways we're more independent than people who live on land," explained Mrs. Roberts. "We carry our own water supply and are able to generate our own electricity. Actually we came through the hurricane a lot better than many people in houses." She laughingly agreed that it was very easy to get away from unneighborly neighbors also, but added that it seldom happens because the people around the docks are "very friendly." In fact the residents of Dinner Key Marina have formed a Cruising Club which not only serves a social purpose but is instrumental in getting improved facilities around the piers. Any plans for becoming landlubbers? "No, we have no plans for moving ashore," stated Mrs. Roberts. "We all like it here." And until something happens to change her mind the address of the Roberts family remains Slip 26, Pier 4 at Dinner Key Marina.
