Want To Write? Write What You Know About
By CAROL ANN YOUNG Ever have a yen to write? The person to see is Mrs. Julia Swart, who has been teaching courses in creative writing at the Coral Gables Youth Center for the last 9 years. While most of Mrs. Swart's students are beginners, some have been successfully marketing their manuscripts. Mrs. Mary Simpson, of Goulds, and Mrs. Beatrice Egbert Ferguson, of Miami, recently won honorable mention in the Writer's Digest Short Story Contest. Plays Written Several students have submitted plays for the Hallmark contest, and most of the students in the juvenile writing class are on their second book. "Write what you know," is Mrs. Swart's advice to beginning writers. She stresses the development of subtlety after first mastering a basic writing formula. She prepares a written criticism of each manuscript turned in by her students. 130 Students Average enrollment in the writing classes per semester has been about 130 students, ranging in age from 19 to 80. Women students are in the majority, but interest is increasing among the men. Professional writers often enroll for refresher courses in novel writing. Mrs. Swart also conducts absentee courses for former students. Mrs. Swart, who has been connected with the publishing business for almost 40 years, teaches public relations at Lindsey-Hopkins Education Center in addition to her work at the Youth Center.

Watching the form Mrs. Tarullo used to win the honor are the other two victors in the tournament. Nearest Mrs. Tarullo is Mrs. Albert Anderson (Low Gross) 2410 San Domingo St. Low net was Mrs. Frank Kriwanek, 755 Tiziano Ave. The recent tournament ended a year-long number of golfing events in which members of the Women's Golf Association took part.
