Part Of People To People Program / You Can Donate A Book To Show U. S. Friendship
Want to help cement relations between the United States and Latin America? One concrete way, according to Warren Blackmon of Coral Gables' People to People Committee, is to donate non-fiction books to libraries. Blackmon, who addressed the Coral Gables Rotary Club recently told the Rotarians of the need for English language books at the Cartagena Cultural Center, where 200 persons are studying English. List Available A list of recommended books is available from the committee. "It is not meant to be trifling entertainment or to convince the Latins that adultery, incest and fraud are our major preoccupations," said Blackmon. "Titles such as American Civil Egineering Practice, Modern Philosophies of Education, America Political Thought and the New Collegiate Dictionary Predominate," Blackmon said. How can you donate a book? You don't have to have it in your library, Blackmon explained. "The People to People Committee is having special book plates printed indicative of the friendship between the two cities. We are asking individuals in Coral Gables to choose a book from our list, pay us the list price for it and we will place in that book a bookplate bearing the name of the donor. Personal Warmth "We feel that it is far better for a prospective young medical student to read a book inscribed from Richard Strain, MD, than from the Coral Gables People to People Committee, a faceless organization without personal warmth," Blackmon told the Rotarians. Strain is Gables Rotary Club president. The former Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce manager warned that the U.S. must step up its programs to South America in the face of ever increasing encroachment from the Sino-Soviet Bloc.

Hopes High For Success Of PGA Tourney
The Coral Gables Open Tournament Golf Committee expressed optimism this week that December's $25,000 PGA event will be fully self-supporting. Mayor John M. Montgomery, general chairman, said the committee is moving rapidly toward its goal of 150 patrons. To date, he said, nearly a hundred area golf fans have made $150 donations to the event. The number compares with a total of 93 at last year's inaugural. These patron contributions, plus general admission revenues from the week-long program, are expected to push the tournament past the financial breakeven point, Montgomery added. The committee also announced that ticket distribution points have been established at the following locations: Allan Abess, Ltd.; Daniels Department Store; Granada Pro Shop; Biltmore Pro Shop; Hurricane Pitch and Putt; Harry Rich Carpets; North Shore Golf Range; University of Miami Ticket Office; Zipp Sporting Goods; Goff's Golf Club Service; Sports Town; Gny Butler's Sport Shop.

Another One Hit / Buildings Take Beating From Local Drivers
It appears to be open season for automobiles to strike buildings in Coral Gables. Two building - a store front and a home - have been struck in as many weeks. Morgan John McMichael, 37, of 317 Fluvia, is the latest driver to be attracted by a building. McMichael, who suffered a cut ear, was charged with drunk and reckless driving the evening of Nov. 16 after his car struck the home of Mary Cook, 3600 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Officers Glenn Arp and William Bennett, who investigated the accident, said that McMichael's car, westbound on Cadima, crossed Ponce, jumped the curb across the street, ran over the lawn and struck the building shortly after 5:30 p.m. A flower box and the lawn were damaged as well as the front of McMichael's car. On Nov. 11, a woman driver jumped a curb on Miracle Mile, knocked over a parking meter and smashed into the front of the Lila May Shop.
Gables Students Boost People To People Books
Students in the Spanish language classes at Coral Gables High School have joined with other Coral Gables organizations and individuals in supporting the book drive of the People to People Committee. Miss Eloise Patterson, head of the language department of the school, called the attention of the students to this practical gesture of Latin - American friendship. The studentts contributed 30 books to be presented to the Inter-American Cultural Center at Cartagena, Colombia. Marked with bookplates identifying the donors, the books accompanied the Coral Gables group which visited Cartagena this month.
