Gables High Notes Senior Wins State 4-H Award

By LESLIE GROSS Jay Edwards, a senior at Coral Gables High School, has won the 4-H Award in the State Beautification Contest. [?]da Easton, Gables grad, has received Freshman Honors at Wellesley. Nicholas Farr, another Gables alumnus, has made the Dean's List at the University of Maine. The Gables High Junior Varsity football team, Wednesday, Nov. 16, defeated the Southwest High Junior Varsity, 20-6. Gables High National Forensic League contingent failed to improve upon its record of last year at the State Student Congress at Tallahassee. Once again, Gables walked off with the overall point trophy, after competition with over 20 schools from across the state. Mike Sadler was elected Best Presiding Officer of House B, and Richard Schuster was elected President of the Senate. NFL'ers back at home are busy with a different issue, that of the current NFL calendars. This year's model already has an advanced sale of 950, well above that of last year. The new calendar will include College Board dates, the football schedules, co-operative test dates, and a wealth of other innovations. Total sale is expected to be well in excess of 1100 calendars. Teacher Honored Mrs. Ruth Johnston, Gables history teacher, has been honored by a local adult sorority. Mrs. Johnston, a teacher in Dade County for over 35 years and the organizer and sponsor of the Gables High chapter of Allied Youth, was recognized for her service to the community in Allied Youth work. The Westinghouse Talent Search team, sponsored by Mr. Walter Bowlby, Gables chemistry teacher, recently began its pre-test sessions for boning up. Bill Zame and Katie Kamp have spoken in the two sessions to date. Last year, Gables placed three students in the Westinghouse honors group: June West, Maxine Goldman and Robert Friis. Friis was selected as one of the top 40 science students in the nation and won a trip to Washington. Mr. Bowlby and the Westinghouse participants are hopeful of bettering last year's outstanding record. National Honor Society recently held its initiation program for new members. The proceedings were held in the school cafeteria on the evening of Nov. 15. Treasurer Penny Poppe was in charge of refreshments and devotions; secretary Catherine Teets supervised invitations and publicity; vice president Lon Dowlen was in charge of lights, cleanup and explanation of membership requirements; President Leslie Gross planned the program, conducted the meeting, and delivered a talk on NHS history and purposes. The guest speaker was our principal, Mr. Rath, who gave an informative talk on college choice and preparation. Quill and Scroll Taps Quill and Scroll, international journalism honor society, recently tapped its new members. Students must have 200 printed inches in yearbook and school newspaper, and must be approved by sponsor, Mrs. Chris Steers, to become members. President Pat Gleichauf tapped the following students: Jeff Tew, Leslie Gross, Bobbi Stewart, Bill Wirt, Lee Sandler, Marilyn Steele, Jessica Snyder, Eric Jonas, Tina Torrez, Cherie Doty, Stu Halpert, Rusti Hausmann, Mary Llew Browne, Jeff Willard, Barbara Berlin, Harold Cheek and Ann Conrad. These initiates were congratulated by president Pat Gleichauf, secretary Linda Schwartz, and other members from last year: Becky Doyle, Ruth Tschumy, Dennis Koger and Jim Lee. Announces New Members Future Business Leaders of America is the Business Education honor society sponsored by Mrs. Ruth Hamrick. Last week, president Mary Jane Ames tapped the following students for membership: Donna Anderson, Judy Berg, Pat Campbell, Lenore Coyle, Pat Daley, Vivian Fortun, Gail Gordon, Toni Guerrero, Ami Kirk, Lyn LaChapelle, Shelly Levy, Pam Marsch, Pat Neahr, Judy Niemy, Janet Patterson, Lucia Rappe, Rosemary Rudolph, Virginia Snow, Mary Willing and Barbara West.

Four Area Men Pledge Fraternities At Emory

Emory University's fraternities have pledged a record number of men following the traditional rush week. Alpha Tau Omega led the list of new pledges with 58 men, followed by Delta Tau Delta with 49 and Alpha Epsilon Pi with 43. Among the pledges are George Richard Levie, 910 Andora Ave., Alpha Epsilon Pi; Ira Pozen, 1020 S. Alhambra Cir., Alpha Epsilon Pi; James Randolph Weir, 1105 Almeria Ave., Sigma Nu; Ralph Robert Eastridge, 3916 Harlano St., Sigma Chi.

Levy, Cornell Get UM Posts

Leonard Levy and William Cornell, University of Miami students, have been appointed to cabinet positions in the Undergraduate Student Government. Levy, 11525 SW 70th Ave., is a 19-year-old pre-law student. As Secretary of Development, he will sit as student representative on the UM Development Committee, making recommendations as to expansion of the University's educational facilities. Cornell, 4360 Ingraham Hwy., is the new USG attorney general. The 21-year-old management major will review the organization's constitution and rules, recommending changes that will promote greater efficiency in the school government's operation.

James Meyer Trains On The Job At Antioch

James Meyer, senior at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Meyer, 1142 Milan Ave., Coral Gables, is currently working as physics department assistant at Antioch, as part of the liberal arts college's cooperative plan of education. Under the cooperative program, students regularly supplement on-campus study with job experiences, usually off-campus but also as laboratory and department assistants on the Antioch campus.
