I urdine's Outlines 'Suburban City'
Dade County's largest "suburban city" plan, blueprinted in the wealthiest area to surround any Florida shopping center, was launched officially Friday, Nov. 18, as development officials announced that Burdine's will be the anchor store. Leases are now being negotiated for adjoining stores. The opening is slated for fall of 1962. The 140 acre area named Dadeland nestles in the V close to the junction of U.S. 1 and the Palmetto Expressway. The tract is 10 miles south of downtown Miami and three miles below the University of Miami campus. Seventy acres will be occupied by an initial 500,000 square feet of store space, malls and parking ground for 4000 cars. Burdine's alone accounts for 130,000 square feet of floor space. Unique Arrangment In a unique arrangement, some 30 acres to the north across Snapper Creek, and 40 to the south are under control for harmonious, supplementary development. With three hospitals nearby (Doctors', Baptist and South Miami), it is expected that doctors as well as other professionals will find convenient headquarters in the southern sector, along with theater, bowling and club entertainment facilities, automobile showrooms and other major enterprises. On the north, high-rise apartments are planned to serve those working in the center, university personnel and others who value the adjoining speedways to other business areas of the county. Consistent planning and architecture in the entire complex, and ideas like footbridges over Snapper Creek will produce a center appropriate to the standards of the people in the vicinity. By 1962 when Dadeland opens, the per capita income of residents within a five minute driving time will be double that of an equivalent group in North Dade surrounding the 163rd St. Center, and a third more than an equivalent group around the heart of Coral Gables. Total Incomes Population within a five minute drive of Dadeland is projected to 1962 at 55,200 with a total of $138,000,000 income then; and within fifteen minutes drive, 224,000 with $415 million income. "Ever since Burdine's started research on the south and southwest area in 1953," said George E. Whitten, Burdine's chairman of the board, "we have known that it is not only the fastest growing area of Dade County, but that it is developing in terms of small estates and custom-built homes, as well as large-scale subdivisions. We recognize that these neighbors will be a discriminating group at high taste level, able to enjoy refinements of living. In this situation, we will build a beautiful store." This branch will be the sixth store in the South Florida group which was founded in the pioneer days of 1898 and now operates in Miami, Miami Beach, 163rd St. Shopping Center, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach.

Bank Of South Miami Now First Bank and Trust
The Bank of South Miami is currently undergoing a half-million dollar expansion of its physical plant. Additionally, new facilities are being added steadily, with a modern and complete trust department being the latest. In order to reflect the new service, R. C. Nahm, executive vice president, announced that the bank is changing its name. Henceforth, the institution will be known as the First Bank and Trust Company of South Miami. Nahm also disclosed that the new trust department - the only one in South Dade - will be headed up by George L. Mendes Jr., a vice president with wide experience in the trust field, who said trust accounts already total nearly $4 million. Eighth Birthday The bank - located in the triangle formed by U.S. 1, Red Road and Sunset Drive - is celebrating its eighth birthday anniversary, and the expansion program is a part of the observance. From its inception in 1952, the First Bank and Trusts Company of South Miami has grown from a $3 million to a $22 million institution. The addition to the physical plant will double the size and facilities of the bank. Architects Connell, Pierce, Garland and Friedman of Miami designed the new facilities. They include a lobby four times the size of the present one; a two-story drive-in teller wing, and a block-long parking plaza that will accomodate more than 1000 cars a day. Completion of construction - being done by the James Thompson Construction Co. - is scheduled for Jan. 1, Nahm said. This marks the fourth expansion of the bank since its opening eight years ago. Nahm said savings accounts have increased from 1000 in 1952 to 5000 in 1960; special checking accounts have risen from 2000 to 5000, and regular accounts now total 7,500. GEORGE MENDES
