Gables High Notes / Spanish, Science And Music Honoraries Tap Many New Members
By LESLIE GROSS Coral Gables High School Junior Red Cross gives help each year with baskets of food as gifts. Their contributions have made the lives of hundreds happier on Christmas Day. This year they contributed to the county-wide drive for stuffed toys to be sent to the Key West area. Tri-Hi-Y gave a Christmas party for about 50 children of migrant workers in Florida City. The children between the ages of six and eight are in need of both clothing and toys. Tip - Toppers made stuffed toys which were taken to Variety Children's Hospital to be given to patients ranging from the ages of 2 to 13. These girls also gave a party on Dec. 23 at the La Posada Convalescent Home. Not to be outdone, Future Nurses bought gifts for needy teenagers in the area. Three Trophies Earlier in December, an individual events tourney was held at Gables. Schools from all over the county attended. In this contest, several Gables students from the Public Speaking Classes participated, including Bunny Goldberg, Pam Weaver, Louis Weil and Neila Lipkin. Land Of Million Elephants
Though troubled Laos is known as the "Land of a Million Elephants," the animals are seldom seen in the royal capital of Luang Prabang. Palace elephants roam at will in near-by forests, and are brought into town only for New Year's ceremonies and special festivals, the National Geographic Magazine says.
