Blue and White Corner Palmetto To Graduate Its First Senior Class
By EUNICE TALL Palmetto High School will have its first graduating class this spring. Already seniors are being awarded scholarships from various colleges. Atwood Brookins, star tackle of the Panthers' football team, has been awarded a scholarship by Florida State University scout Don James. One condition is that he must gain 40 pounds within the next eight months. Besides playing a good game of football, Atwood also is an active member of the Palmetto track squad. He specializes in the high jump and the broad jump. Atwood finished ninth in the state track meet last year in Gainesville. He competed against more than 40 contestants. Being recognized by both The Miami Herald and The Miami News, Atwood was chosen second-Team All City guard recently. (Four other players from Palmetto were chosen to honorable mention positions by The Miami News. OB Activities The Palmetto Band and majorettes, known as the Pantherettes, were invited to participate in the Orange Bowl festivities beginning Dec. 31. The Band and the Pantherettes will march in the annual Orange Bowl Parade New Year's Eve and perform for the reviewing audience and judges. The Band and Pantherettes will also perform in the Orange Bowl Classic during the halftime Jan. 1. Yesterday, the Pantherettes performed during the halftime show of the Junior Orange Bowl Game at the PBA Field, Coral Gables. Huge Exchange A huge exchange of high school newspapers from all over the country, as well as the local high school exchanges, is received weekly by the Palmetto Panther, school newspaper. Approximately 65 papers arrive weekly. One of the greatest advantages of the exchange program is the new ideas that are acquired by journalism students from the various schools. Papers are received from Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina, New York, Maryland and Washington, to name a few states.
Southwest Orchestra Gives Yule Concert
By LAURA HENRY A Christmas concert was presented Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium by the Southwest High School Orchestra. One of the highlights of the evening was a trombone solo by Bill Griffith. The Southwest Debate club won two out of three debates in a contest with Miami Jackson High recently. Manuel Lopez and Steve Blum participated in an oral interpretation contest at Coral Gables High School. Southwest was represented in the county Championship debate by Gene Odell, Larry Pins, Bobby Kotch and Richard Siegle. Girls Show 127 Cakes Imagination and culinary ability were displayed by girls in six foods classes, who created 127 fairy tale scenes out of sugar, flour, baking powder and whirring egg beaters. Gumdrop and popcorn trees, a white coconut lamb, and Santa Clauses greeted guests at the annual party last week. A medieval cake castle, a large Hansel and Gretel house, and a church were among the edible creations. The cakes were delivered to the Home for the Aged, the Children's Home at Kendall and the Cardiac Home. Two special cakes went to Dr. Lee Aber, who is recuperating after an operation. School Groups Collect Presents Ten needy families, two of them Cuban, enjoyed Christmas because of the thoughtfulness of the students and faculty at Southwest High. The families were chosen with the aid of the school welfare committee headed by Mrs. Helene Lephew, dean of girls. One teacher who practices what she preaches is Mrs. Mabel Staats, Lancer faculty advisor. She was asked by Row Peterson Publishing Company to write a monograph on teaching poetry in high schools.
