Comic Book Publisher Aspiring High School Cartoonist Has Fun With 'Fistix'
A YOUNG CARTOONIST is Allan Ormsby. The youth, seen sketching a figure, hopes someday to be a professional cartoonist. The 16-year-old is a junior at Coral Gables Senior High School. Ever think your son had an unusual hobby? Well, so does Mrs. V. H. Ormsby, 1336 Obispo, whose son, Alan, 15, has been a cartoonist since he was in the second grade. Alan first got the cartooning bug from television and comic books. He started drawing his own comics, which became quite popular among his friends. While still in elementary school, Alan drew cartoons for posters and his school paper. Always looking for new outlets for his ideas, Alan and his friends put on a series of comedy shows in his garage. "My brother's pet rabbits and guinea pigs furnished most of the ideas for my characters," he said. Comic Magazine Upon entering Ponce de Leon Junior High, Alan began putting out the "Children's Weekly," a comic magazine which he sold for 10 cents. This proved so successful that he started other magazines, sometimes doing as many as eight at one time. Only one "monster magazine" met with ill will when the school's principal objected to its distribution. Alan's main character, "Fistix," was created from a fad in his tenth grade homeroom. Taking the face from the expressionless puppets drawn on fellow students' hands, Alan added a body and sarcastic sense of humor and a new personality emerged. Gables Junior Now a junior at Coral Gables High School, Alan is working on a new cartoon book, "Gaff," to be sold around Coral Gables every two weeks. He plans to hire newsboys to help him with distribution. He is also taking orders for humorous Christmas cards. Alan is saving his money to buy a ditto machine so he can print his own publications to save on outside printing costs. Although he has never sold any of his cartoons to a professional publication, Alan's future plans include "either being a syndicated cartoonist or owning a publishing company."

UM Purchases 30,000 Books On Economics
More than 30,000 books on economics and related subjects have been purchased by the University of Miami Library from the John Crerar Library of Chicago. Dr. Archie L. McNeal, UM director of libraries, said the important purchase was made possible by a gift from the late Meyer Gold. The collection was made available to UM when the Crerar Library reduced the scope of its general collection to specialize in science and medicine. "These additional volumes will add historic depth and geographic scope to our present collection," said Dr. McNeal. "An acquisition of this type is particularly important to our relatively new library, which lacks many of the out-of-print works obtained through the years by the older institutions." Most of the new acquisition consists of works published in the nineteenth century, but at least one volume dates back to 1576. Many bound volumes of periodicals are included and at least five languages are represented.

Grizzly Diet
During its 20 to 30 years of life, a grizzly bear may eat anything from ants to beached whales, the National Geographic Magazine says. It relishes meat, fresh or carrion, but devours considerably more vegetation. To break the winter fast, a grizzly begins on new grass, grazing as contentedly as a cow.
