What's Your Problem?

By JOSH PERKINS Syndicated By Perkins Enterprises Hampstead, Vermont Dear Uncle Josh, "My husband is what I call a '[?]rer." He feels that the best way to win a family argu-ment is by ranting and rav-ing. This puts the children in tears and has completely unnerved me. What can I do about this problem? Troubled Dear Troubled, I have always been a great admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, and believe his great principle can be applied to both large and small problems. I speak, of course, of pass-ive resistance. Here is how it can be applied to your situa-tion. So evening after dinner when you are all together have the family don loin clothes. (Female members of the family should, of course, wear saris). Then start a family argument. As soon as your husband starts to rave in his customary fashio[?] have all the children throw themselves upon the floor, staring at him with cow-ed expressions. This demonstration, as it did the British, will so surprise your husband that he can not help but get a point so dramatically illustrated. This is how cottage industries began India. Uncle Josh Dear Uncle Josh, When I was only a girl I married a man I thought was my ideal, instead he has turned out to be a hard-drinking brute. My dream has turned to ashes. I am what is known as a feminine type woman. "All chintz and crinoline," my mother used to say about the little home I made after the marriage I entered into with so much hope. Now that home is like the corner bar, all full of bottle caps, beer cans and cigar smoke. I wanted tulips in the window and love in our hearts, but instead this is what I have. Thank God there are no children. Mother has been my mainstay to me. Desperate Dear Desperate, Try being a pal to your hus-band. Hunt and fish with him. Tramp through the woods. You may be smothering him with your sweetness and femininity. Go to the corner bar with him and let him suffer the shock of seeing your gentle self framed against the low company of which he is so fond. If you really want to destroy his illus-ion of you, smoke a cigar in the living room. Many women have. You've seen their pic-tures in the newspapers. Fight fire with fire. He'll come around. Uncle Josh

Six Weeks Program Coral Gables Trains 18 New Firemen

FOUR NEW GABLES FIREMEN are learning the fine points of firefighting here on the first day of a six-week course at the new station on S. Dixie Hwy. and Riviera Dr. Left to right are Donald Bender, John Kentala, Lawrence Maden and Lawrence Brockett. In the back of the classroom is Gables Fire Chief Paul Matheson and TIMES News Editor Maurice Labelle. Eighteen new firemen reported for duty recently for indoctrination and training at Coral Gables' soon to be completed fire station on South Dixie Hwy. Chief Paul Matheson, Capt. Ralph Boartfield, training officer, and Personnel! Director Robert Harrison briefed the men on their duties and responsibilities. Construction of the new fire statio itself is expected to be completed in a few days. The 18 new men will undergo an extensive six-week basic training program before being assigned to various fire companies. To Be Assigned The lucky ones will be assigned to the plush new quarter of a million dollar station, the others will go to the old station at Salzedo and Aragon. Following a six-month probationary period, the men will be regularly assigned. They may quit or be released at any time prior to this without recourse. Employment of the 18 new men and expansion of the Fire Department to two stations will create openings for three new lieutenants. Appointed Later They will be appointed later, Matheson said. Here is a list of the 18 new firemen: Donald H. Bender, 21, 17000 NW 54th Ave, Opa-locka. Harold W. Benson, 23, 720 NE Third Place, Hialeah. Robert T. Boutelle, 28, 4120 SW 107 Ave. Harold S. Algeria Is Big

Turbulent Algeria is four times the size of Metropolitan France, the National Geographic Magazine says. Only three percent of Algeria's 920,000 square miles in North Africa grows crops; a mere sixth can support livestock. But new oil wells and iron deposits in the Sahara and recent finds of diamonds, nickel and copper in the Hoggar give promise of important economic growth.
