Coral Gables Woman's Club Flower Show Love For Arranging Inspires Hobby

Mrs. M. S. Farrar, who will be doing one of the "Spectaculars" at the Coral Gables Garden Club two-day show, Friday and Saturday at the Coral Gables Masonic Temple, 41 Valencia Ave., lives and breathes flower arrangements. Chairman of the artistic division of the show, Mrs. Farrar is a nationally accredited flower show judge, an artist in floral arrangements and lecturer and instructor. She is on the district speakers list for the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, giving programs on table setting, flower arranging and Christmas arrangements. Sets Record Mrs. Farrar holds the unusual record of winning the most awards in one show in one day. They were blue ribbons in the artistic division, the table setting division and the sweepstakes. Her affiliations include memberships in the Ikebana Study Group of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Garden Club, National League of American Pen Women and the Order of the Eastern Star. Her pictures of arrangements in full color and in black and white have appeared from time to time in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, sponsored engagement calendar. One is pictured in the 1961 edition entitled 'Snowball in the Tropics," a design using white beautyberry and red hibiscus in snowball type container on teakwood base with red and white velvet swags. All Phases Creatively, Mrs. Farrar is interested in all phases of art. She designs and makes all her own clothes, hats and jewelry. She also has had a course in modeling and models in fashion shows at the Country Club of Coral Gables where she also teaches flower arranging. She contends that the Floral artist must keep abreast of the times from a decorative standpoint, as well as architecturally, coupling knowledge gained this way with the basic principle of design. She stresses dignity in simplicity and "clean cut" lines in her arrangements. Mrs. S. M. Greene, immediate past president of the Coral Gables Garden Club, is show chairman, and Mrs. E. T. Collier is Rose chairman. Mrs. E. R. Ehly is chairman of staging; Mrs. Frank Race, entries. In charge of classifications will be Douglass Knapp and S. J. Motts. Mrs. Archie H. Comer, wife of Eastern Airlines Capt. Archie Comer for the past 25 years, learned to shoot quail with her husband while tramping through the Everglades. In 1936 she became Women's Skeet Shooting Champion of Florida and also Southern Champion the same year. For 15 years she was an outstanding tennis champion and played in tournaments at Forest Hills, competing with the English women's champion. Lived On Farm All this plus an interlude of milking 20 cows a day and running a tractor on their Georgia farm (where they lived during the war) made her find use for the extra strong pair of hands she possesses in winning many a first award in Garden Club flower arrangements. Mrs. Comer never knows just what she will arrange. For the first award she ever won, the arrangement was in a milk bottle. She decided to compete in a flower show and had no particular container to use. Word got out, and offers of containers came pouring in. She refused all, sprayed the milk bottle and made a beautiful arrangement. She won a blue ribbon. Cloud Pattern Mrs. Comer has been invited to make an arrangement for Friday and Saturday's shows. She hadn't decided what to do when she was quizzed by Mrs. Malcolm Lovell, president of the club. But she said, "I have been looking at the clouds watching their formations, and the pattern will arrive soon." Mrs. Comer attended the University of Georgia and is a graduate of the University of Miami. She and her husband pledged their vows in 1935 in the Gables Congregational Church. They have one daughter, Connie, 11 years old. Mrs. Comer is a member of the Coral Gables Garden Club, an accredited Flower Show Judge and is presently teaching at Vineland Elementary school.
