Rotary Celebrates 56th Anniversary He Builds Bridges Of Friendship

By MAURICE LeVOYER "Seventy years young, and still going strong" could be one way of describing Joseph W. Hunter, 1042 Sorolla Ave. One might even say that Joe, as he prefers to be called dabbles in "construction work." Actually he is a retired medical service representative, and the only "construction work" he does is in the field if "Building Bridges of Friendship." Hunter has been chairman of the International Contacts Committee for the Rotary Club of Coral Gables since 1957. The Committee's purpose is to bring the people of the world closer together and enable them to have a better understanding of one another. Lack Of Understanding "Most of the problems of the world are due to a lack of international understanding," said Hunter. "What we're trying to do in International Contacts is to ease the tensions among men and nations by bringing the youth of foreign countries together with out own people." Each month he sends congratulatory letters to all the new clubs in the Rotary world, and each week he brings two new overseas students to the meeting of the Coral Gables club. With the help of Dr. Louis JOSEPH W. HUNTER Melina, who is in charge of foreign student registration at the University of Miami, Hunter is able to get in contact with all the newly registered foreign students. The list of countries that have been represented is vast. Practically all of South America has been represented, not to mention students from Mexico, Cuba, France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, China and Japan. Keep In Contact Many of the students keep in contact with him even after they have gone back to their homeland. "It's pleasing to know that I've been remembered," said Hunter. "During the years that I've been in this pleasant work the dividends have come in regularly." His mailbox is continually crammed with letters bearing postmarks from the four corners of the earth. There are very few students that he doesn't recall by name, and very few that don't thank him for the services he has rendered them. "Everyone of them has as much personality as fleas on a pup," said Hunter. "It's been wonderful working with them, and I hope that they have learned as much about us as we have about them." Hunter has been a member of Rotary International for 22 years. Because of his work as a traveling medical service representative he was able to get a cross - sectional view of the workings of the Rotary club. First Idea It was at one of his many "make-up" meetings that he first realized the potential of the foreign student program- The St. Petersburg Rotary "imported" some of the students from Florida State University for one of their meetings. The students put on an entertainment program that was well received by all the members and their families. When Hunter returned to Coral Gables he decided to avail himself of the material in his own "back-yard." The plans were laid to better international relations with the help of the University of Miami foreign students. For the past five years the International Contacts Committee, a sub-committee of the International Service Committee of the Rotary club, has been running with nary a flaw and Joe Hunter will always be thankful that he has had the mind and the will to help in the "Building of Bridges of Friendship."

University Drive Next In Coral Gables' Plans

Improvement of University Dr., from LeJeune Rd. to Ponce de Leon Blvd. is expected to start shortly after bids are called sometime in mid-March. William Fagan, Coral Gables public works director, said Friday that the $35,000 project will involve re-alignment of the drive to eliminate a hazardous driving condition. Additional Funds The City Commission last week appropriated an additional $1568 to improve a short stretch of University Dr. on the west side of LeJeune in connection with the LeJeune Rd. widening project now underway and expected to be completed before the end of the year. An additional turning lane will be made possible by that move, Fagan said. The two-block long stretch from LeJeune to Ponce will be widened from approximately 30 feet to a uniform 46 feet. Replace Sidewalks Some sidewalks will have to be replaced, Fagan said, and new parkways will be constructed, although no landscaping such as on Miracle Mile or Ponce is entailed. The road surface itself will be rebuilt and the present traffic control "button" island at the Ponce intersection will be re-aligned, made permanent and landscaped, Fagan said. Drainage facilities will also be relocated, he said.

Playground Wall Cost Doubles

A new wall for the playground at Sunrise Harbour doubled in price from approximately $1000 to $2000, Coral Gables City Commissioners learned Tuesday. The wall, previously approved for construction by the Commission, now faces a dubious future because of the lack of funds. Architect Kenneth Treister, who presented a design plan for development of the park, had indicated earlier he could obtain a mason to erect the wall for approximately $1000, but the deal fell through. The problem was turned over to the newly created Recreational Advisory Board.
