Mrs. Lantz now rates as official 'city mother'
From Page 1 ber of the South Miami city council, while the proud father is a Dade County judge and president of the South Miami Area Chamber of Commerce. The members of a city council, along with being known as legislators, lawmakers and the city's policy making body, are often referred to as city fathers. There is a reason for this. Figuratively and in fact, the members of former city councils were fathers. But they also were bankers, attorneys and insurance executives who presented a fatherly image to the community. But now, in South Miami, in view of the recent birth of Mrs. Lantz' big, boy, it would be more appropriate to refer to the South Miami council, or at least the majority of it, as the city mothers. Of the five members of the city's legislative body, three of them are women -- and they all are mothers. Mrs. Jean Willis is the matriarch of the trio, both in number of years on the council and in maternal seniority. She is the mother of a daughter (a son died many years ago) and is a grandmother. In addition, Mrs. Willis has been on the South Miami council for 20 years, having taken her seat among the city fathers at a time when women in politics still raised some eyebrows. Next is Mrs. Cathy McCann, who is the mother of three children, all of whom are as excited about campaigning for their city mother as they are about hitting home runs in Khoury League. The latter day mother, of course, is Mrs. Lantz. Now that the city budget is out of the way and the tax rate has been set for another year, there could be a tendency at coming council meetings to discuss diapers, formulas and what to do until the doctor gets there. But, except for adding the feminine touch to the city, there is in reality little chance of domestics entering into coming city policy matters. While many women, even the libbers, don't know the difference between general obligation or revenue bond issues, or variances and easements, the South Miami city mothers are easily as well versed in city government as their male counterparts. Homework may mean the usual domestic chores for most women, but to the trio of South Miami mothers, it also means reporting to council meetings with an astute knowledge of city business.
